I'm a small fish in a big pond when it comes to lawn care, but for me working in the afternoon and going door to door has met with great success per contact than any other method. Plus it has the added benefit of building clients that live in close proximity to each other.

To be successful it requires observation over time. Notice who in the neighborhood cut their own grass, also about what time "dad" comes home. Then when I'm cutting my customers lawn, after I'm done I knock and introduce myself. "Dad" doesn't want to go out and get sweaty. Price is reasonable, he can see the work I'm doing. Add a good sales pitch and I've got a new client.

(sidenote - currently I've got all the business I can handle in my current situation. I'm part time with 20 lawns on a regular basis. For me to grow I would have to make some changes in either equipment and/or the time I put into business. Right now I'm not sure I want to make those changes, so I'm not actively seeking new clients.)

Do you find many people home during the day? Who usually answers the door husband/wife? Or someone else?

Who do you feel is the best to talk to and would you come back at times to talk to them?
