I just leaned about your website. So far, it is very helpful for someone at my age.
I am only 17 years old. I got my first account when I was 11. Every year since then my business has practically doubled. It doubled on acount of referals to other customers, buying new accounts, which I am glad that I only paid one month of revenue for, and it has grown by people basically wanting to help me pay for college.
When I started i just wanted to make a few bucks. Then, i wanted to pay for college with my lawn care money. Now, as i decided last spring (2007), i have decided to do it for the rest of my life.
I have had a little bit of help with the business aspect from my Dad and My older Brother. I pretty much figured it all out on my own. I have learned the basics about running a business. I have leanred that becoming an Entrepreneur is about taking risks, but the right ones.
I worry about doing this for the rest of my life for only one reason, there are so many different companies that are out there, that it becomes hard to compete. I see a great demand for the lawn care industry in the next 30 years on account of the Baby Boomers retiring and not wanting to do manual labor anymore. So, i guess that the rise in demand is proportional to the number of companies that there are. I wonder, "what is going to happen to all of the companies when the Baby Boomers eventually die?" The demand for the industry will still be there, but it will still plumit, and i believe that many companies will go under as a result.
As for myself, I will set my goals as high as they go. I live in the Kansas City Area, where it is mainly dominated by Hermes, a multi-million dollar a year business. they seem to have everything: Sprinkler systems, a nursery, all of the landscaping covered and of course that actual mowing. I know that it seems like nothing for a 17 year old to say, but they are goin' down. I am small now, but i am very determined to overcome Hermes and be the dominating business, in the Area, maybe even a Nation Wide Company when it's all over. Don't be surprised if you hear of Mears Mowing Lawn and Landscaping in the next 30 years.
I didn't start mowing with commercial mowers until about 3 years ago. My business has exploded since then. I am so overwhelmed with school, sports and mainly my business that i don't know how it all gets done? I wish that i could do it full time now. However, i am going to go to K-State and get a degree in Landscape Architecture.
I caught my first big break last year by getting my first appartment complex. It has been like a dream come true. I don't plan on stopping there!!!

Wow...what an awesome story! Great idea getting a landscape architecture degree from K-State. I go to the University of Western Ontario (Canada) and run the maintenance side of our company in the summer...people seem to love the college student thing when you tell them about it, so I would suggest playing that up. I've definitely found landscape installation (which is the other side of our company) seems to be more lucrative with the bigger ticket jobs.

Hey welcome aboard! Id say Signature is bigger than Hermes!!!
Im pretty sure there will be enough work for all of us, you seem to have no problem getting accounts.
I live in Shawnee, if you ever get backed up (rain, equipment broken, whatever) give me a call, I can sub for you.

Could you tell us how you went about finding the accounts to buy? What % of them stayed with you? Also did you have any problems at all with the lawn care business owner that you bought them for?
Any suggestions on how it would be best to handle this transaction?

Do you have any advice for others on how to do this? Would you like to share your story on how you did this?

hey thanks for the offer Mike Nelson,
I may need some help this spring. I don't know?
What do you mow with?
About how many accounts do you have?
Are you the only employee for your business, or do you have help?
If you want (you don't have to because this is the internet) can you tell me about where you live? The majority of my accounts are in shawnee, around Quivira and 75th St. Where are you mainly located at?

Ive got a Lesco 48 hydro walk behind.
No employees as of now, I dont really want any, been there done that.
How many accounts, NOT ENOUGH!! LOL.
I live at 75 and K-7, I could throw a rock to your mow area. Keep me in mind if ya need a sub, I have some space as of now.
Ive got about 14 years of experience in the industry so I can handle almost anything you got. If a customer asks you to do something you cant handle, let me know, I can probably help ya out.

How do you like your Lesco 48.
I had a buddy that had one of those. he was always having problems.
I might have a job for you. it's really bad though. I don't want it because it isn't regular (So it gets rediculously long). The guy is really a sleaze ball. He still has leaves down from last year. He only pays me $25. He can't afford if i raise the price. I am going to drop him and give him to the little neighbor kid. You can have first dibbs if you want. If i were you i wouldn't take it, but it's your call.
the only other work that i am going to be really busy with is some landscaping in Lenexa (a new apartment complex off of 87th and Pflumm). I will need help putting sod in. I can only pay $9 an Hour. You probably don't want to do that either, but if you're really desperate, then i would be glad to have you.
everything else is under control, as of now. i might need some assistance when i get backed up with the rain, however.
call me if you're interested inany of these.
