I have a question for you Chestin or any of our other members please feel free to jump in.

When do you feel it is good to use coupons on your website?

For example, our friend Dean is working on his site and he has these coupons.

Now I can see the advantage of having a refer a friend coupon but what about offering discounts for services. As in the $50 off the $500 install? Do you want to offer this to customers who are already at your website? Or should this be distributed in other ways and used as an inducement to attract customers to your site?

Coupons are an excellent way to motivate your prospects to take a specific action and there are many places you could use them.

As it relates to your website, you should use them in ways that coincide with your goals for the site. In most cases, the first priority of your website should be to capture the contact information of the site's visitors so you can continue to market to them after they leave. Because email marketing is still the cheapest way to market to your prospects, capturing their email addresses gives you the ability to continually market to them again and again and again, all for zero cost.

Now, one way to help make that task easier is to offer service coupons as an incentive to leave their information. In exchange for their name and email address, you give them a coupon good for a discount on their first service. You could easily add a form to capture this information and then after they've submitted it, either send them an email via autoresponder with the coupon attached, or redirect them to another page where they can download the coupon.

You could also use the fact you offer a discount coupon as an enticement to get people to your website. For example, in your offline marketing materials you would let your prospects know they can get a discount on services by simply visiting your website and leaving their information. Then once they get to the site, make the form where they can get the coupon very prominent so it's easy to find.

There are of course other ways you could use coupons, but that's how I recommend businesses use them to help achieve the goals of their website.
