Default Sample Cuts???? Are you kidding me?

I need some opinions. I already handled it, but I want to know incase this happens again.

I got an email yesterday from a guy looking for a quote. I emailed him last night with the price, and he emails me today with:

"Can you do it as a one time cut and if I like it I'll hire you? I'd be more interested in biweekly service."

I said in a polite way, NO WAY. I quoted him a one time cut price. I also had my PITA Customer meter ringing so loud I put earmuffs on.

What would you do????

It would be interesting to get a sample girlfriend. You know commitments and all that other crap get in the way. Lets have wild sex first then see where that takes us.

I would tell him that the "sample cut" cost 2 times a normal cut and if he signs up for the season the next mow is free

How are you going to explain charging the customer 2 times the normal price and then turn around and give him a free cut if he signs up? What's he to think when you charge him the normal price?

It wasn't a joke and I already thought of something like this.

Lets say my one time cut is $45 and my biweekly is $35. I thought of charging the one time cut of $45 and if he goes with me the rest of the year, I'll discount his second cut to $25 to make up the difference of the one time cut price. The reason I didn't was because he seemed like a PITA and I don't want that this year.

But by far the best response was SECT. Your valuable input has guided me in the path to manhood. After reading your comment, I told my wife I want a divorce, and that I was only sampling her. I let her know I'd like to sample a new wife now.

"Hi, this is Steve, How may I help You?"
'How much would it cost to cut my grass?"
"That depends o the size of the yard, and other factors."
"Well it's just xxxx."
"For a yard that size I get xx per month, but depending on what is there I might have to add a little, Like fence around the yard, a pond, a lot of trees, flowerbeds etc."
"oh I just need it cut one time, I can handle it after that."
"I don't do one time cuts."
(I am not looking for money today, I am looking for money in the future.)

I wish I could do that. But I get some decent business from one time cuts. People having parties and they don't have time to cut, people going on vacation or coming back....theres even a guy who calls me when he works too many hours and is too tired to mow. If I pass by the area, I'll be glad to cut for some $$.

I already work 6 days a week and don't have time to do one time cuts. If I were to get more long term work from someone then I could justify hiring more to cover the work. Hiring to just shoehorn in a one time cut-not worth it
