Default How To: Change the oil in a lawn tractor

I thought this would fit good here. I hate the mess that is commonly made when changing the oil in my tractors. The ones I use out in public are always kept nice "showroom condition" washed, waxed and the works. It may be over kill but it keep everything looking good, except of course the oil mess if you don't clean it up well. Here I am explaining for beginners how to change their oil but then take it one step further by adding a modification to make it easy and less messy in the future.

you know they sell this at your local dealer for less then $20 that includes a hose you can put in an old coffee can to take in to your local dealer and recycled.

That is interesting. I can not get that anywhere locally, I suppose I could buy it online, I have seen some tractor purchased out of the area with what looked like a factory drain valve on them but they were all flimsy plastic, they all leaked oil and a small branch seemed like it could rip them off. In fact recently I fixed a neighbors tractor that had a leaky plastic drain valve on it.

P.S. The parts cost my $12 but as I said I had the valve already so I am not sure how much it would cost with that. If I remember right I payed $6 for the brass valve, I normally use them for fuel shut offs after my needle fails and filled my case with fuel on another machine last year.

Any Briggs dealer should be able to sell you that(we currently sell them for 12.49), in fact they should have them in stock as they sell pretty decent. I am surprised you do not use a standard fuel shutoff for a few bucks I have never had one fail that was not just left open forever.

The only people here that sell B&S parts is lowes and they don't sell fuel shut off's or oil drain valves. I install the shut off's now after nearly destroying an engine when it filled with fuel, I also install these drain valves on everything to keep it easy and fast when changing out.

Like I said the only other parts I have seen were VERY flimsy plastic valves that nearly always leaked. I have fixed my neighbors because it would leak any time the engine was under pressure. It was constructed out of a very weak flimsy plastic.
