It all started when I was about 7 years old, living in the country where I helped my dad mow the lawn. As I grew up, I also helped my grandmother and other family members with their lawn care to the point where people knew me as the “mowing kid.”

It ended up becoming something I enjoyed since I liked having the time to myself. I also liked seeing people smile when they got home from work, knowing that they didn’t have to go mow.

In 2008 I started up my own business with some small customers around the neighborhood. Within the next two years, through word of mouth, my small business grew to about 80 clients.

That is fantastic! Do you do any marketing now or do you find all your customers through word of mouth?

Do you have any advice to new start up lawn care business owners?

I got a good marketing story for you....I was out today putting post cards in doors. I had some spare time so I figured I better get started.

I found this nice neighborhood, so I pulled the truck over. I figured I'd walk to a few houses, and get to the first house. I put the card in the door, and start walking to the neighbors. Then I hear it....

First was the growl, then the bark. That little pitbull was running full speed. I took off like I was running in the olympics for a gold medal. The only thing that saved me was the dog was on the chubby side.

I made it to the street thinking the dog would stop, but he kept on coming. So I got in the truck and turned around. I saw the homeowner open the door and look at me. I rolled the window down to make a joke out of the potentially bad situation, but he looked at me and just shut the door.

Maybe I'll call him in a few days and see if he got my card!

That is a very interesting story and sounds like a good plan! You never know.
