Default oily exhaust from trimmer

My Troy-Bilt TB25CS trimmer has oily black goop coming out of the muffler. A lot of goop. It just got a new carb and I think something is not adjusted right.

The fuel mix is right, 40:1 per manual, it gets ethanol free gas, and it starts and runs great. The plug was fouled with wet oily goop but it still ran great. New plug now. It does use more gas than before the goop.

There was no oily goop before the new carb.

Suggestions how to fix this? How can I do it myself if possible.

Lawn care business tips
It sounds like it is running rich and blowing a lot of the gas oil mixture right out of the exhaust. Is there a way to change the mixture and make it run a little leaner?

Thanks Steve. Sounds like it could be the problem. I don't know how to adjust the mixture. The manual just talks about the idle speed adjustment and says take it to a pro for other adjustments. Can't afford that. There are two things, cylinders, posts, on the carb that might be adjusters but I don't know how to turn them or what they do.

If you play with the carb settings, try to remember what you changed it from. Try a half turn one way or the other but remember which way you went so in case it gets worse, you can set it back to where it was.

Take a picture of the carb? That way we could see what it looks like.

I found this, including a photo of the cylinder things. Looks like they are the adjusters and an expensive special tool is needed to turn them. I'll try to improvise something.

My brand new stihl trimmer was doing the exact same thing. After taking it to the dealer 3 times and exhausting the fact that I was not mixing it rich the stihl rep gave me a new one. This was on odd case though. Never found out what was really wrong with it. Now I got a fresh new one that does not do this.

A while back I think there was some new federal law that changed the ends of those screws so the average person couldn't mess with them and cause them to burn rich and create more pollution.

Check out ebay for the tool.
