Default Jungle Yard

I had a call from a military man on leave to give a estimate for a mowing. After a quick conversation I told him a general idea of price for a 1/3 acre yard and he told me to do it and sent payment.

So at about 7 p.m. I pull up after a long day and see this nightmare. I gave it a quick look and called the guy back with a new price. He agrees and I go crazy on the yard. I finished at 8:15 p.m.

Now next time ill be sure to ask when was the last time it was mowed? I thought I was in for a easy 20 minute cut. I did have a feeling it might be a little high but this is ridonkulous.

I was worried about it getting dark so I snapped these pictures before we were fully finished.

I do about 2 of these each year. They command a premium price for sure and around here you can get it because no one else will do it. Not easy money, but good money. I had one a few weeks ago that I declined, the weeds were actually taller than my head. Stems were 1 to 1 1/2 inchs in diameter, suggested a backhoe to scrape the lawn and haul away debris. Wish I had taken a picture of it.

Do you have any advice as to the best way to go about dealing with such a customer once you give them a price, prior to seeing the property and then have to change it later?

Do you think the customer was trying to pull a fast one when he asked for a price site unseen and he knew the property was in bad shape?

My advice would be to not give them a price. I usually give them a range if there persistent. Thats what I did with him but since the guy wasnt going to be home, I needed a deposit to start. When I seen the yard I told him it was going to take 3-4 hours to do and it will cost this much.

In this situation he asked for a mowing but this wasnt mowable. He really needed to ask to cut down brush. That type of quote will always have to be seen first. Im not sure if it was out of ignorance or trying to save a few bucks.
