Default Golden Opportunity

What a week, topped of with a pretty darn good day...

I have signed 5 clients this week making 10 total for me. That's the good week...

Now for today, my mentor, the ex LCO boss i have mentioned called and offered me a job....He's swamped, needs help, called me before posting an ad on CL...

Now, this isn't a him OR Saber Lawncare....It's working with him around my schedule.... So I'm able to work with him on M W F and mow my clients on T TH

He told me he knows how hard it is to start up, and figured he'd help me out while I help him out until I get busy enough or feel comfortable enough with the revenue of Saber to go at it alone.....

Plus, we're going to make a striping kit and thinks he has a couple sulky style platforms, I'll have to get the wheels for them, but a lot cheaper than getting a new sulky...

Should be an very very good summer.

This is a very interesting situation! How do you think working for another lawn care business will effect your lawn care business? Will it take away time when you could be doing things to grow your own business?

Well, I wouldn't just go out and apply for any lawn care company, this is my mentor, great guy and he called me offering me first dibs on an opening he had.

He knows about my plans with Saber, and will work around my schedule until the time comes I need to stop working with him.....

We are not in the same area, so there is no competition between us.

Anything I need to do for my business i can do at night or on the weekends....plus my wife can continue to hand out fliers. I can take calls and return calls in between jobs with him and schedule bids for on my way home, I'll just take a change of clothes.

I have my lawns scheduled on Tues and Thursdays, and work with him Mon, Wed and Fridays.

I've read posts about guys taking on a second job and posts about the first couple years are tight....My 2nd job just happens to be with an LCO I trust and respect instead of delivering pizzas or what have you.

I decided to take the risk, I think it will be worth it. If I can't juggle it, I'll choose Saber, but give him plenty of notice to know I have to focus on my business and he knows that.

Heck, I've worked 3 jobs before, I have 2 deployments in Iraq under my belt...what's being busy with an extra paycheck coming in?

This sounds like it will be a helpful step! It will be fascinating to see how quickly business ramps up this season. You might find yourself swamped with lawn care work for your own business soon enough!

I'm getting busy. Just got home from working with the mentor LCO today. 16 yard mulch job....

2 bids came in today, from fliers we handed out last week. I have appointments to go bid those properties tomorrow after mowing my current clients.

You're fortunate to have someone to bounce ideas off of and get tips/help from.
I only sorta know one guy in the business and I hate to bother him with too many questions, but he's helped me a bit with pricing guidelines when I started up.
Aside from that, I'm on my own.

Exactly, I have two reasons for saying yes to his job offer....
1- He is the first guy to give me a job after I got out of the Army, I needed help then, he needs help now. He's been in lawn care since 1985, the past two years have been his busiest...Actually when I applied it was a temp job until i figure out what i wanted to do after the Army, I ended up making the wrong choice and left his company and went into heating and cooling...for 2 years i would install AC units and look at the lawn companies and think " that is the perfect job". Him giving me a job caused me to find that job everyone talks about "if you find a job you love, you'll never work a day in your life."
2-It's income until i get enough accounts to support myself. Simple and to the point, but money is what makes the world go round, and he's going to pay me to do what I enjoy, while working around my schedule and help me with my business? I mean, c'mon, i'd be silly to say no

I wouldn't feel bad asking questions to that guy you speak of....he's probably wanting to talk about it. Ya should ask him out to a breakfast some Saturday morning and pick his brain...he'd probably love it.
