Here is a program I put together for 2008. It hasn't been tested yet, but lots of reasearch has gone into it. Anyone else have any other ideas?

First, conduct a lawn assessment. Decide whether or not the existing turf is suitable to sustain a change from conventional lawn maintenance to organic lawn maintenance. Look for weeds, bare spots, uniformity, compaction, light issues, drainage issues, etc. If turf is unsuitable then renovate or reestablish. If turf is suitable then proceed to getting a soil test. Look to correct any major deficiencies.

The fertility program gets its N from two applications of corn gluten meal, two applications of The Sanctuary 10-0-10 and from the topdressing applied after aeration. The schedule and amounts follows:

April- apply corn gluten meal at a rate of 12 lbs./ M providing 1.2 lbs. of *N/M.

June- apply Nature Safe 9-0-9 at a rate which provides 0.5 to 0.75 lbs. N/M.

August- apply corn gluten meal at a rate of 12 lbs./ M providing 1.2 lbs. of *N/M.

September/ October- apply topdressing composed of peat and composted manure after core aeration.

November- apply Nature Safe 9-0-9 at a rate which provides 0.5 to 0.75 lbs. N/M.

Throughout the season the lawn will be monitored for pests and the problems which accompany them. They will be dealt with on a case by case basis.

Maintenance- The lawn will be cut at a height of 3 and not be allowed to grow past a height of 4.5 before being cut again. The clippings will be left on the lawn. There will be an emphasis placed on having sharp mower blades for each cut. Irrigation will be decided upon before the season. The lawn will either receive a supplement of 1 of water per week if there is no rain or the lawn will be left to go dormant and only given a small amount of water if extended drought periods exist (4-6 weeks). Weeds growing in the lawn will be removed by hand as best as possible depending on the amount of weeds.

Hi Vetro,

Welcome to our forum!

Will this be your first year in business or your first time experimenting with an organic lawn program? What got you interested in offering this service? How has the response been so far?

hotwired 04-02-2008 05:40 AM

Can you tell us where you're getting your material? Is it local or are you having it shipped?

How are you applying your top dressing? Do you wheel barrow piles and spread or do you have a spreader?
