What are the common problems you found forums run into and what's you take how they should be resolved?

tiedeman 11-22-2006 11:21 AM

Two things that I see all the time.

1. A guy can never answer a question without either 1) it going seriously off topic, 2) being made fun of or laughed at for a stupid idea or question.

2. Moderators control too much of what is said based on their sponsers. If you use a sponser product, and you don't like, and try to talk about it. That thread and/or post is deleted, and 9 times out of 10 you are banned from the site. It is horrible. You can not also talk about another forum site without it being deleted.

Steve 11-22-2006 08:58 PM

Tell me this, especially with the first item you mentioned. How should a fourm go about dealing with that? Should posts that

be removed, editted or what? How should it be handled?

How should users be dealt with?

tiedeman 11-22-2006 09:08 PM

Part of me says to be selective by only letting certain members in a site, respond, or view things.

Perhaps have it where new members can only view a new member area. After lets say 50 to 100 posts, their posts are evaulated, and if they are deamed professional, then they are let into other posting areas. Perhaps even have a membership fee for posting on a forum, like $25 to $50 annually. That wards off a lot of bad apples perhaps

Now here on Gopher, I have never seen a topic go bad or people made fun of. Which I love that. To me it seems like the only people that post here are professionals either asking for help, or trying to help someone else.

Steve 11-22-2006 09:34 PM

Have you ever seen any other forums that had a large user base actually handle these things properly?

Or once a board gets to a certain size it just gets a little out of hand?

tiedeman 11-22-2006 09:37 PM

Yes, I have seen it many times of where large user base boards have gone horrible.

Usually what happens is that new guys, or younger guys come onto the boards. The older more experienced guys, are annoyed with the new guys, and cut them down or don't help them. Also sometimes the young guys come on, and are not professional at all.

Steve 11-22-2006 09:49 PM

So ultimately this is where there needs to be a two tiered group. Newcomers and older members and you have to post for a while in the new section before you can post in the more veteran section?

tiedeman 11-22-2006 09:51 PM

I personally think so.

Steve 11-22-2006 09:59 PM

Why do you think other forums have failed to institute such policies?

Do they know they are having such problems on their forums? Or are they unaware?

tiedeman 11-22-2006 10:03 PM

Well, I think that they would be afraid to lose members, in which it could happen.
