3 Applications or 5 Applications
What do you think is better to promote?

I do 3 using slow release Anderson products with a Winterizer as a option.
The big companies push 5 or 6.
I live in the midwest with all cool season grass.

I feel that it is much better for a timing standpoint,with the drought we had last it made no sense to me to do applications mid June-July.

I still put down the same amount of fertilizer but with 3 applications.
I always make sure my customers have good weed control and will go back if I need to.

What do you Pros think.

4 its alwaays better 2 spring 2 fall 2 pre emergent and one winterizer difent number each aplicattion

I think it probably varies a lot on local weather, grass types, available product, etc. I use SiteOne (used to be John Deere Landscapes) as my supplier and they have several programs built already and I pick which one works for me and my customer. They give me a schedule with all the chemical information, application rates, etc. The plan I am on is a 6 application, but they have a 5 application also.

If you are using a supplier built for landscaping companies and not Lowe's or something online, check with your supplier and see if they can help you build a plan for your area and needs.

At what point do you feel the amount of applications becomes just for profit or to be used in marketing that you use X amount of applications where a competitor may offer less?

I think this is a valid point and depends on the yards condition and your local conditions. I'm in Central KY and we have active weed growth for most of the season (crabgrass prevention in spring, dandelions in late spring, nutsedge and chickweed in early summer, clover in fall and winter) so there is always something to spray. In some areas, maybe weeds aren't a problem after spring. I have also heard some guys say there is no reason to fertilize in the spring, as the grass is growing without any help. I can see how one would see it this way, but don't agree. My chemical plan focuses on developing root growth in the Spring for the grass to be ready and hardier for the summer dry out. I also put a Summer Guard fertilizer on in June to help with this too. Then fall and winter is about getting the grass ready for the next year, so it comes back thicker and healthier. In KY, we can get extremes in Summer and Winter (100 plus degrees and then 12-18" snow storms) so I think our grass has to be better adapted to these changes as opposed to up north or down south.

Have you ever had any push back from customers over a 6 step process or do they feel as long as they can be told why they need it, they will buy it?

I have had zero push back. I get most of my customers from Scotts, TruGreen, or WeedMan not keeping their yard looking great. So I just tell them that this is the plan they need to do and it will look good. Always had great praise from these customers after the first couple apps and nobody has complained about price. (I am right on track with the big guys in their per app price).

On a side note, I had WeedMan before, they only apply fertilizer or weed control per app, not both. Also, had Scotts a few years ago and they actually do 7 apps in this area. So, I do 6 and generally do weed control and fertilizer per app. Sometimes, generally summer when the grass is burnt, starting to burn, or recovering, I just spot spray weeds as needed when I do my fertilizer. Otherwise, I do a granular weed control with my fertilizer and spot spray at time of visit.

What's your view on why your competitors are doing less than you? Is it to keep costs down? Or something else?

If they are losing customers, wouldn't they call them up and ask why and the change their service program?

As far as Scotts and TruGreen, they seem to accept that they have a lot of turnover. When I cancelled, they seemed like it was no big deal. WeedMan is owned by Hillenmeyers Landscape Services and it was of the bigger WeedMan franchises in the country. I worked for Hillenmeyers Landscape Services and they actually plan on a 15% customer loss every year. My guess is WeedMan is the same and they don't sweat losing customers until they go over that 15%.

WeedMan does it every other time for costs, the owner, Stephen Hillenmeyer is greddy and about to retire and is trying to milk every dollar he can out of the business over the next few years. TruGreen actually had a 7 app program and Scotts was in line with me at 6 apps. I see my local area going away from these larger companies though and more towards boutique providers, like myself. There is a local company in Lexington that pretty much only does chemical apps and they are growing. Also, I have seen a lot more of the small and medium places adding spray services and growing with it.

We currently apply 5 applications, with the option of adding a grub control application in the summer. Pg. 34 of the May Turf Magazine features a company that only applies 3 applications.
