Need another truck
So I need another truck for snow removal. I been looking for over a month and I'm running out of time. I need something already set up to plow since it cost more to equip a plow.
Everything in the $2500-$5000 range is junk.
I did find a 97 f250 with ezdumper and mm plow mount but people are selling the mm plows for $2000. That would come out to around $5000.
My other option is dealers. I found a 05 f350 with plow, 5.4 81,000 miles for a 11k thats about 90 miles away. A 01 f250 crew cab with plow, 7.3 145,000 miles for 9995. A few 02-04 in the 12-14k range.
Not sure what to do. I dont want the overhead. I could put half down making payments lower. I like the miles on the 05 but like the diesel on the 01. I think 9995 is high for a 01 too.
What you think? Spend a little more for reliability and have more overhead? Get something cheap that I can pay for with cash but might break down?

We all need to vote, with a simple explanation to help him make his very difficult decision.
Buy used, but bring a mechanic to inspect the used vehicles.
I have never bought a used anything, but I have still had to get things fixed pretty often. So used vehicles either have more problems, or just the same amount give or take.
What are some good things to look at when looking for a used vehicle?
4 Wheel drive
.. etc... I'm bad at this.
I would have a mechanic take a look at any vehicle that caught my eye. I almost bought a van once, my mechanic told me a list of reasons why I shouldn't. **- saved me!

How mechanical are you when it comes to fixing trucks? Would it be worthwhile going more junk to get you through the season and then maybe scale up later when you are able to save some cash?

#1 NEVER buy a truck that has already had a plow on it! You will pay for that in repairs. People don't sell a plow truck unless its a headache and used up.
Buy the 05 ford, I have a 01 F-350 with the 5.4 and it has over 200k miles on it and has been plowed with for 7 years. Love that truck! Stay away from diesels unless you buy new, older ones will cost you tons to repair.

Life's lessons I have learned:
1 RUST any sign of frame rust turn around and leave... I spent about 3400 (a lot was labor due to cutting off bolts from rust) Salt chews up trans lines, brake, fuel lines and oil pans) on my truck lately had to replace most of the front end of my 99 f350 7.3 diesel
I bought it for a few reasons pulling power the shape it was in/ dual purpose work and family vehicle, and gas mileage.
2 Diesels are sissy's with cold weather. You either need to have AMAZING GLOW PLUGS or plug it in (pocono type weather my neighbor used a block heater and a heating blanket on the engine while it was parked in his garage or it wouldn't start)
3 Diesels not a lot of people work on them.
I would lean towards a truck without a plow and buy a new plow and have it mounted. Your 2k Fisher MM is for the setup or setup and install? A friend bought a western for $400 and it was going to cost minimal of 2500 to install it he spend the extra money and bought a 5300 plow with free install and a 2 yr waranty from western. Just some food for thought get some install quotes first if it doesn't include that.
Def have a mechanic you trust check out any truck you are thinking about buying even if you gotta make the 90 mile trek twice. It will pay off in the end!

#1 NEVER buy a truck that has already had a plow on it! You will pay for that in repairs
What kind of repair issues can come up with used trucks that have plows on them? What should be looked out for?

let me tell u about a beat truck last year i bought a 2000 K 1 ton dump with 25K miles and 9 ft Western v plow paid $4250 Kelly blue was $8500 on truck and $6200 new for plow so i thought i was getting a deal
1-new engine $1775
2-fuel lines brakes tires ect$1000
3-replace cats both banks clogged up $1250
5-new tune up cap wires cap dis in parts $350
6-4X4 parts starter $275
7-new plow controller $375
8-truck is geared low 456 rear 7 mpg $ priceless
truck price +$4250
i didn't even add all my time for the stuff i did now the Kelly blue book has gone up to $9500 but I'm still under water with this truck long story short the guy i bought it from bought it from a auction it was a mall plow truck so that 25K is like 325K when he got it he did a tune up mixed two wires had a miss witch put gas in oil and exhaust in turn burnt out bearings and plugged up cats ect suck part of this is i did nt know any of this in till after i bought it me i will never by a plow truck I'm buying new or a truck with out a plow and add a plow

Buy According to the amount of work you have for it
How many driveways do you presently have? What kind of income do you expect at the end of the season? Will the truck be used year round with your business? How do you want your business to be seen?
Its a big decision and one that I personally don't take lightly. My last truck venture took almost 2 years before I found the exact fit of what I wanted to do with the truck and condition.
Don't let the diesels scare you away. I have a Ford F-250 with a 7.3 and starts fine in the winter. We do keep it plugged in when it falls below 10 degrees.
We also sell and install New and Used plow outfits. If your trying to buy a truck and have a used plow fit or vise verse you would be looking at around 1400.00 for the truck side kit and the install. Install usually runs between 3 to 5 hundred.
For a new plow installed...prices vary by brand and uses. The Western 8' uni-mount on my Ford was 8400.00 new...HD V-plows are more. Don't buy a home owners light duty plow if you intend on plowing a lot of driveways. They just won't hold up to the constant use...go with a HD model or professional one.
Buying one with the plow installed. This is usually the cheaper way to go in the long run and can start making you monies right out of the gate. Look for a package that has the HD transmission and suspension. Try and stay away from the rust bucket...if there is any surface rust that can be seen....good chances it already done salt damage underneath.
And your correct in that it is a big decision. How will the public see your business when they see your plow truck with business information on the doors? A rust bucket is usually seen as cheap and not so reliable. A nice truck can also be seen as expensive.
Every place that truck goes is instant advertising for your business...how do you want to be seen?

I bought a 1/2 ton with no plow and spent thousands on it. Me or someone I know did all the work too. Now I'm trying to sell for the same amount I paid for with no luck and it didnt even run when I bought it. I made the mistake of bringing the guy that works on my trucks with me. He told me everything was fine so he could line his pockets on repairs.
I really have two needs. First and foremost I need another plow truck. I need fuel efficient truck for light duty work since I'm done with my 1/2 ton. I could pick up a cheap 2wd down the road so I'm to worried about that. Then I need something for the rest thats gets better gas and is more reliable then my dump. I only want to use the dump for plowing and heavy duty hauling.
I have only a few driveways, I stop taking customers in october. I have 9 commercial accounts mostly seasonal. The seasonal money could pay my expenses and buy the truck twice. I just need the truck before the snow starts coming.
Its the landscaping work I'm more worried about. As of now I have one commercial property from last year. If I add a truck payment and increase in insurance that job will just cover my overhead. Then its pretty much whatever I sign up in the spring for profit. I do have two commercial properties for snow removal next winter too.

I wouldn't buy anything in the price range you want to spend. You will end up with junk! Last winter my truck was totaled by a drunk driver. I went out to get a new one with the insurance money. About $ 12,000 I found a 2006 f-150 4x4
For $ 13,500 with 125,000 miles. I have a buddy with an auto shop, I bought all of the usual maintenance parts. Brakes, hoses, belts, trans filter, diff cover was rusted so replaced that. Spent around $ 1,000 parts and labor. Ran great all summer. I was thinking about plowing until I got the estimates for plow equip starting at $ 4,800 minimum. None of my customers inquired about plowing so I am taking the winter off. I don't really need the money since I squirrel it away during the summer. I have a dump trailer and don't have to put fuel in it or pay insurance on it every month so no dump truck. BTW I had the truck up on the lift at the dealer before I bought it to inspect everything myself. I would definatly buy used again! My next truck will be a used Penske box truck, they have some great deals.
