Hernia

Ugh. I've got a hernia. It doesn't hurt but it sure is disconcerting to have some of your guts hanging out. I've got to figure a way to come up with $7000 for the surgery.

Steve 10-21-2011 03:37 PM

Sorry about this happening.

This has happened to a couple friends of mine. One of them, went out and got it fixed right away and had some surgical mesh put in.

While the other has put it off and wears some kind of belt contraption he has made. He has felt more and more pain over time and can't do much of anything.

The thing that most people seem not to get with this is that you don't need to be lifting a ton of weight for it to happen.

Ducke 10-21-2011 07:28 PM

I have had the operation three times.
once on each side and a second one on my right side the last one I had the mess put in and the Doc says it good for life, the standard why is only good for about 10 years.
Its not all that bad but if your going to do it, do it in the winter as you will be off work for 6-8 weeks.
Good luck and take care of it the longer you wait the worse it will get.

Do what you can to get it treated right away my friend.

I hope you are doing well, seriously.

Has the doctor said anything about how to prevent it from happening again? Or do you do anything differently now to avoid any future problems with it?

It would probably be good for others to know what not to do.

There are several issue at play with a hernia, It is a torn muscle in the abdomen wall usually vertical ( but not always) and the inner horizontal muscle pops out though the tear. causing a bulge that hurts like heck (^@#%*$&^) The thing is that when standing the muscles act normal its bending or sitting that seem to cause the most pain, I use to like sitting cross legged to watch TV on the couch, well that was painful and the reason I went to the Doc in the first place. The longer you wait the more of a chance you take of a Strangulated hernia were instead of the horizontal muscle popping through you intestine pops out and the vertical muscles squeeze it and cut off the blood flow to it and this is not good at all. It can KILL you.
Prevention it simple and we hear it and see it all the time ALWAYS LIFT WITH YOUR LEGS NOT YOUR BACK. this one simple thing will help keep the strain off you abdomen muscles and help prevent tears.
My hernias were from my early teen years when I worked in warehousing,
Repetitive WRONG lifting weakened and tore the muscles that and my Beer Gut at the time too.

The surgery is scheduled for next Friday, January 13th. I paid the surgeon the first half as he requested.

I'm a bit weirded out about getting anesthetized.

Pfffttt! Knock me OUT! I wouldn't want to be aware of anything - not even for a splinter!

I hope it all goes well for you. I assume that's a pretty routine procedure that doesn't require a trip to the Burgh and one of the "big shot" docs?
