  • Need Color for Winter Texas Beds

I need to plant some color in a bed that the deer will not mess with and also can handle the cooler weather here. I will be planting a great deal of flowers so I would hope to be able to have them stay alive for at least three months. Any ideas would be great to hear.

What about Kale and mums? Like in this photo. Although certain plants will work better in certain areas.

Thank you I thought about mums but was not sure how well they do in a freeze. We do not have many in Texas and they do not last long. Thanks for your help. I have found that not many respond when it comes to plants.

I think the Kale does better than the mums. Usually the first frost kinda ends it for the mums.

What else are you thinking of using?

The City bed is so large that I may go with some evergree to fill in so I do not have to use as much color. I also am having problem finding something the deer will not eat due that this is on the outside of town and lot of dear are in the area.

Do you have a local garden center you buy from? Maybe they have some suggestions for plants to use in your local area? I'd love to hear what you come up with.

You don't necessarily have to buy from them, but they might be able to offer you ideas that will work locally.

I went yesterday and they said that pansy would work. Said that a lite freeze would be okay and that deer do not eat them. Price is 18.00 a flat for 18 onset. Said the owner may give me a discount. I will need 12 flats.

I think the pansies will look very nice if they will last at least two months.

Oh fantastic! I did not even think about them! Take some pictures of what you come up with when you are done. I'd love to see.

update and this did not happen. I have come to find by talking with growers that with light freez and dear there is nothing I can plant during this time of year. Just mulch and wait for spring planting. Thanks guys!

Have you seen any other plantings around town that have seemed to last through the winter or no?

                              The deer love them.
