  • Charging by Sq Ft

    I was thinking about bidding my mowing services by the Sq Ft. Can anybody help me figure how much to charge per Sq Ft. I'm trying to be more consistent with my bidding. I seen some where that the going rate was $0.003 per Sq Ft. That sounds a little high to me. I'm located in West Virginia. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    I bid my jobs by 1,000 sgft. For mowing, I bid $18.00 per 1,000 sgft per month for lawns up to 10,000 sgft. I give a discount for larger lawns because I am already at the job and don't have travel time, etc. I also give 5% discounts for seniors and military.

    I came about this figure with the notion I wanted to make $50.00 per hour.

    I use the same process for figuring just about anything else that can be figured by area. I. E. aerating, fertilizing, leaf clean-up, etc.

    For commercial multiple properties (mostly foreclosed homes by banks and real estate co's) I charge $14.00 per 1,000 monthly (weekly mowing) and $7.00 per 1,000 sgft bi-weekly. By multiple, I mean contracts for at least 3 properties. Note: Banks and RE Companies will not even talk to you unless you have $2,000,000.00 liability coverage! They are easy to upsell if you will do additional services such as rug steam cleaning, painting, etc. Good for raint days.

    Figure how much you want per hour and go accordingly.

        So you charge less per cut if you cut it every other week?
        These are monthly charges.

        Weekly - $14.00 per 1,000 sq ft per month.**
        Bi-weekly - $7.00 per 1,000 per sq ft per month.**

        ** with at least 3 properties per month contract.

          Morrislawn,

          I don't charge by the square foot, but if a property is oversized or an odd shaped lot I will use a measuring wheel & walk it off in front of the potential client during the estimate. If I charge X for a 10,000 sq ft average lot & their property is 13,000 sf then it's easier to show them in real numbers why they are going to pay 30% more than a client with an average lot.
          You can stand there & say "well your property looks a little bigger so I figure It'll be Idunno $5 bucks more..." or you can show them that for a fact there is $5 more work here & I should be compensated for the additional, time, fuel, & wear on equipment to service the additional area.

          You can't really argue fact. Plus you'll appear more professional for having done so.

            So i've got a lawn that is 136000 sq. ft. and you charge $14 per 1000 sq. ft. so its going to cost me $ 476 right? And thats for you wanting to make $50 an hour correct. I havn't put this into the lawn calculator but I would suggest to anyone starting out to use it because I think it will save you in the long run. Plus everyones expenses are not the same so prices will vary.

              136,000 sq ft is 3.12 acres. My quote of $14/1,000 sq ft is for lawns up to 10,000 sq ft. I give a discount for larger lawns. Over 1 acre discount is 12.5% so the bill would be $1904 - 12.5% = $1,666 or about $415 per week.

              That would be about 8 hours per mow, edge, clean-up per week at $50 per hour.

                Over 1 acre discount is 12.5% so the bill would be $1904 - 12.5% = $1,666 or about $415 per week.

                  That's a large lawn! How do you advise coming up for a price on such a property? Originally I was talking about how I price by 1,000 sq ft. The $14 per 1,000 sq ft per month was the price I quote Real Estate Co's for foreclosed properties with at least 3 contracts. I said for larger properties I give an additional discount.

                  My lot is the largest in my sub-division - 1.88 acres and more than half is woods. I have not bid a job that big (136,000 sq ft). I was responding to a previous post here. When I made up my pricing sheet, I put in discounts for over 10,000 sq ft in various increments si I could obtain $50.00 per hour.

                  If I ever had the chance to bid on such a large lot, I don't know what discount I would offer. At that rate, just 5 jobs would be $475 x 5 = $2,375 per week. I would be very happy with that and Plan to expand immediately. Put on at least one more truck and 2 employees.

                    Let me get this straight. It takes you 8 hrs to service a 3.12 acre lot? What are you using a 21inch walk behind. My personal property is 3 acres and I can mow, trim and blow under 1.75 hours with my 62 inch Z. I have 2 other 2acre estate sized properties with fenced in areas for horses (lots of trimming) and I'm at about 1.5 hours on those. I fetch $90.00 for each one of those. I'm getting $60.00/ hour.

                        Trying to clarify my post more.

                        I have never bid a job this large. I have no idea how long it should take with travel, clean-up, mowing, edging, etc. What I was trying to do is show how at my $14 per 1,000 sq ft charge, would be $50 per hour. I probably would discount this farther. After all, this is my first year. I have only 18 jobs so far. The largest is 19,000 sq ft.
