  • Bush Hogging

Does anyone do bushhogging? I have a John Deere 790 with front loader and 5' rotary cutter. I have done pretty well with it, but I keep underbidding. I just did 10.5 acres in vacant lots in an up-class subdivision. I bid $650.00 and realized quickly that the job was going to be tough. Heavy undergrowth, stumps, chunks of conrete, electrical wire, you name it. It took me 14 hours. Fortunatetly the customer was more knowledgeable than I was and paid me $1000.00. He also gave me a monthly contract to maintain the property for $750.00. Does anyone have a set amount they bid per acre? per hour? Would appreciate some advice.

    Hi Gary,

That is a very interesting question. Looking back, what do you think you should have charged for that job you bid $650.00 on?

I think the $1000 was a fair price for my time and I only used about $100 in gas and diesel. That worked out to around $75.00 per hour. We normally try to stay at $60 or above for mowing but bushhogging in badly overgrown areas is really tough on equipment. I've heard of people charging $100 per acre in relatively well maintained areas.

What would it cost you to rent that equipment from a rental center for that time period?

I'm guessing around $150 per day but I'm not sure. This job plus another I did at the same time took 2 days.
