  • rockford speedway go or no go

ok guys heres the deal i have been doing alot of thinkin of ways to get my name out there and i am a former oval track racer myself so i thought hey why not propose to mr. greg mckarnes the owner of the rockford speedway about mowing for him i was thinkin if i mow the proprety and take care of all the mowing trimming etc. then i could maybe advetise on the back stretch of the speedway i look at it like this how many of you have seen rockford speedway on speed tv that place gets crammed pack plus i would be getting my name on national tv well kinda lol but hey its ok for me to think that way right lots of people tell me im crazy its just to much but i look at it like this its awsome advertisment that really im paying very very little for my time and fuel and over a longer period of time i dont have to have up front cash to advertise i can use it on other methods of advertising what does everyone think of this idea is it a go or no go i figure me doing it myself im lookin maybe a full day of mowin if that here is the link to the speedway if anyone wants to check it out www.rockfordspeedway.com

    Jeremy,

That is a really good question.

I found a picture on the internet I think of Rockford Speedway. Would you propose that you would have a sign like those in the top right of the picture?

How long would it take you to service this property each week?

How many times a month would you service the property?

yes that would be the rockford speedway and thats what im hoping for is a sign on the back stretch or on one of the ends i wanted to get everyones insite on this first and im guessing it would take me a full 8 hour day to do all of the property and probably mow like once a week im not really sure on that cause i know they are runnin some wensday shows now also which all in all this would be great cause i have tuesdays and thursdays open scheduling wise for like the landscape jobs etc. if i picked this up i think i would still be ok
look in the picture the stands are filled and the ones on the opposite side of the track are for pit crews only which i think they need to open that up too more money and people just my thoght though

                Dude,

Id be all OVER that, my company name on the infield!

I think its a great idea, but what are the demographics of the people that attend dirt track races. Is that typically the type of person that hires lawn companies.

Now say you had a liqor store, I would for sure do that.

Please dont take this post as a put down on the "race fans" I like racing, I am blue collar, as most race fans are, and most blue collar folk do their own work.

Also not trying to discourge you from this idea, just wanted you to think about where your target audience.

                Make sense?

My hair is turning white, my necks alwayas been red, my collar is still blue

this is an asphalt track and it is nascar sanctioned ther are alot of very high dollar teams that race there that is why im not racing there cause my pockets do have bottoms and i cant afford to keep up with them like that so my thinkin is if they can afford thesae big olsemi rigs then there house is probably pretty nice and they would pay for it

                    Jeremy,

I think you should try it out maybe for a month initially and see how things go. I'd hate to see you get locked into something that you couldn't get out of for the season.

This could work! However we all got to keep in mind that this is basically 4 days a month of work. So if you were charging $50 an hour for your services. The amount of lost revenue would each (($50 x 8 hours) x 4 days) = $1600 in lost revenue per month.

I do hope you will keep track of where your customers initially heard of you when you start getting phone calls to see if it is from this ad.

I bet you could make a stencil to make your lawn painting faster as well.

Let me know your thoughts on this.

There is a local track here that offered me a similar deal, Has a track similar sized to the one in the pictures above & a huge grass parking lot, pits are grass & an area around a pond. Offered me a trade off for advertising 1) on a 4'x4' sign as race fans walk in it's right at the entrance 2) an add in all their programs on race nights. It would be about 7 hours work for me weekly, he has mst of the equipment to be used & will supply fuel for the machinery (his & mine if I need to use it) I haven't yet decided what to do. I walked into the race office & asked about it last week because there was a lawncare company on that sign a month ago & it was painted over, they apparently quit. I don't know why, the owner of the track say they gained "alot of business from this". Could be B.S. & it didn't work or I was thinking.... If your out to ideally work 5 days a week & servicing the track takes 1 to do thats 20% of your time making no money. If it did work & you gained much business you'd have to quit servicing the track to service your new customers or buy another truck, trailer equipment & hire a crew & just hope the business keeps coming from it. I have yet to accept or decline the offer.
                      Still up in the air.

                        Chuck,

Is there anyway of finding out who the previous lawn care business was? Could you call them up and ask them about their experience? Do you think they would give you an honest answer?

I got in touch with the owner of the other company that was doing the work there today. Turns out he did the work there for months & months, it took the track like 3 monhs to put his sign up as promised & they never got him put on there web site or in the programs as promised. He also volenteered & he & his employees were running the broom crew every saturday night so he coud get his truck (all logo'd up) out on the track in front of the fans. He told me he never gained a single account from all of this & the expenses got too high so he quit doing it. So bottom line is I don't think I am intrested in this form of advertisment at all.

Chuck I am really glad to hear you were able to do some investigation and find this out. Not only did you help yourself out with this info, but you helped everyone else on here who was considering this.

There is such an allure to having a sign at a race track. I know there are many many people who see these races, but if they don't result in sales, then the time spent there isn't worth it.

There are plenty of places where you can spend time to generate interest in your lawn care business but this doesn't appear to be one of them.

Well if he wants to try it at rockford I hope he has beter luck than this guy did. I think it's kinda like Mike said earlier in the post "most race fans are, and most blue collar folk do their own work." It seems to just be the wrong demographic. You might have better luck voulenteering to mow a golf course for free if the put your name & number on the side of all their golf karts! The clientel there is more our clientel though that would be a ton of voulenteered time....
                              OH WELL.
