    I might have tried offering the same $425 but every 10 days, you get your price, and he saves $425

    Just curious what size mower your using?

      I would run. I would have flat out said find someone else. I mow less than 4 acres for $300 no way I'm touching 13 for anything less than $500.

            Well I decided to call the guy today right before 5, central time. He had two full days to look at the bid. So what he said was the my $425 for the 13.8 acres was a little high. I would be paying out over $1,600 a month.

            There is no way I would touch it for that kind of money.

            He said weekly though. Cant argue with that.
            Yes he did, he also said 1600 a month was too much but by offering to mow 3 times a month your able to give him a price reduction, while at the same time allowing you to have a price your comfortable with. Its a good compromise to consider for both sides...

            Just because its not exactly what he wanted doesn't mean you might no be able to land it. 12 acre's with 60" mower takes me about 5-6 hours @ 80% efficiency, as long as the area is relatively flat. If you can group it in with another high acreage job that is near by and make a day of each time I don't see why you couldn't make $700-800 for the day that way.

            Sounds to me like you want this account, so why not try the different approach?

                  Try waiting a week and follow up again, worst he can say is no as you left it, he might not bother calling you back. Maybe say something like; I was thinking about what you said, and in an effort to cut some cost for you this is what I came up with...

                  One of my favorite quotes, "You don't know what you can do until you decide to stand and try"

                  If he doesn't call you back and you decide not to give it one more try you gain nothing and save yourself only the cost of another phone call.

                  Here's one of my favorite follow up successes from my business:

                  About 4 years ago I bid some cleanup work and the guy told me he had a lower bid, my bid was $1200. Every time I drove by I noticed that the work was never done. I contacted him again almost 5 months later and said I happened to be on your street and noticed that the work we had discussed never got done and offered to meet him again and see if we could find some common ground.

                  We met, made some changes to the scope of the work, in particular I didn't have to take the wood chips away. That change saved me a major chunk of time and we did the job for $950. I've done about $25k in work for the guy since that job. I was also able to refer him to a friend of mine who redid the roof on his barn along with new a kitchen and bathroom in his house. I'm not saying it will work for every client but sometimes finding a way to cut costs and still get the job done will gain you much bigger rewards down the line.

                    Thats some good ideas. I can also say, if he can afford it, if you pay up front for the month, I can give you a discount, maybe 10-15% or another option. I could also say, the smaller property you have I can do it for free, but still keep the big property the same. It comes out to be the same either way really.

                        1. Pay one month up front and I will give a 15% discount on big property.

                        2. Keep the $425/week and mow the smaller property for free.

                        3. Mow every 10 days at the $425 for 13.8 property and other every week.

                          No, I guess you misunderstood what I wrote. I would mow the smaller property every week and then the bigger one, the 13.8 acre property every 10 days. So that cuts one mow out of the big property.

                            I would call him back and ask him what it would take to earn his business for the season. He will probably shoot that low ball number at you and you say I understand that the price is an issue for you but I cant do it for that number but what I could do is.... and then offer him a way to save. Option A 380 per cut and explain the service he would be getting again and the attention to detail that you put into your work. Option B Every 10 day cut for 400. Option C 400 a cut and he could Pre pay for the whole year and recieve 10% discount (that is a great way to grab some quick capital but he may require a contract to ensure himself that you wont skip out on him) Option C 425 cut and break the payments up over a 12 month period to lower the out of pocket cost for him.
                            Just offer him one option if he dont bite then try a differant one. If nothing works your either gonna have to lower the price a little bit or tell him thank you for his time, if he has a change of heart or knows of anybody needing your services to give you a call. hahaha

                              What is your view on why some business owners seem to do this fairly easy while others don't like to follow up?

                              Had you always followed up or was there a turning point where you all of a sudden realized that if you didn't call back, you were leaving money on the table.

                                What is your view on why some business owners seem to do this fairly easy while others don't like to follow up?

                                Had you always followed up or was there a turning point where you all of a sudden realized that if you didn't call back, you were leaving money on the table.
                                My first year, I figured it out pretty quickly. I had very few opportunities and when I saw other people were getting the work on jobs I thought I should have landed I started being more proactive. I found that following up demonstrated a higher commitment which really helped me gain new clients and eventually get some that on the first try I wasn't in the running for. Having bills to pay is a great motivator to get over doing things your not comfortable with...

                                I would pose this question to other business owners; if you had a second chance to land a client you wanted but didn't get, would you seize the opportunity and talk to them again? If the answer is yes then you need to follow up with your clients, especially if you can see the job never got done.
