  • Lawn Clean-up (mostly leaves)

    So I have gotten a lot of calls recently for leaf clean-ups and general fall clean-ups.

    I just stopped by a house that is on about an acre. The customer expressed interested in mainly having the leaves (that are surrounding the perimeter) cleaned up, and also the weeds pulled that are in the beds.

    After walking the property I thought it best to just measure it out. I measured nearly 1,400 feet of fence-line and beds. A lot of leaves are against the fence and in the beds.

    Most of the beds are pretty clean, but some need weeds pulled, but nothing too bad.

    He also has a huge pile of debris he wants taken away, and claims he can get free dumping at a local place (some coupon or something).

    I told the guy that I'm a one man show, and this is rather large for me, and I might be calling in help from another company. Really I just wanted a day or two to think about the job.

    I really have no idea how to bid this because it's so large. With past clean-ups I would charge a couple hundred dollars, and if I apply the same math I have used in the past I should be quoting him $700-$850 for the job. But in the past I have been in the dirt really pulling weeds, this time its mostly going to be leaves I feel.

    Well, seeing as this is your first BIG job, why not aim low and let him know he has "so much" of a discount as a new customer you will do it for X amount of dollars. What kind of equipment are you going to be using? Rake and Trash bags? If you are going OLD SCHOOL that way, i would tell him you are charging by the bag (commercial 45 - 50gallon bags). I usually charge 12$ a bag and count when i am done, hand them the bill, if they have a problem, go for it. Tell him you will load all of the weeds into the bag so the pricing is straight.
    If you are going to be using some kind of vac/shredder, i would charge by the foot. Most vac/shredders are on a 1/12 chop, so you will get 12times as much into one bag. Charge them by the foot or by the hour.

    "Disposal" - I dont know what area you live in but, most counties/cities in the state of Florida allow 12+ disposals if you live in the city/county you are disposing of yard debris in. (they chop it and sell a truck delivery charge to drop it off at a residence or property, same thing with soil)

    It is all upto you how you want to do it. Do what you feel comfortable with.

        Rakes and a light hand-held (Echo) blower.

        I might have to just tell the homeowner I don't have the equipment for the job.

          Just pass on that job. I would not do that job with a handheld blower and rakes. 850$ seems high, around here that job would bid out alot cheaper. (without seeing the debris he needs hauled away though) Since you do not have the proper equipment for that job, you could talk to the guy and work out an hourly rate that both of you are comfortable with.

            What equipment would you recommend and how much would you suggest bidding with such equipment?

            How long would you think it would take you to do with the proper equipment vs with a handheld blower and rakes?

              Personally, i would take a loss on this job just to get into the area that has a property to that size. Its gorgeous and could evolve into a lot more business.

                If i was you i would check out your local rental company and see what it would cost you to rent a leaf vac. around me they are going for about $85 a day. come up with a rate per hour typicly for leafs a 2 man crew goes for $45- $75 and hour. if it is just you doing the work i would go on the lower end like 40 an hour because your doing it your self it will take longer. take your rakes and your blower and your rented equipment and get r done 2 hours and you paid for the rental and can have other work lined up in the day adding proffit. bigger lawns take more time and work the owner knows that thats why he called you so dont worry about charging him just dont take forever do a good job he will pass your name around. good luck

                    for everyone it might be different and people all have there own way of doing the job. i own an acre of land with a lot of mature trees maples wallnuts locus etc and a 6 60ft tall pines. so i have a lot to clean up it takes me about 2 hours to blow everything into pilles and then i suck everything into my leaf vac i have attached to a dump trailer. the best way to learn to see how long things take is to do it at your home. so i would say it would take him 3 to 4 hours using a vac and blower and wayyyy longer to rack them into bags something i wouldnt even consider on a large property like you are looking to bid. you might want to see if the home owner is ok with just mulching them up with a mower. best thing to do is just go for it thats how we all learn and we still do.
