  • what to do with under bid properties?

    I've been going at it for a month, I have 4 accounts and I realize that I under bid one of them. I didn't understand adding in more money for obstructions, and now it's costing me big as far as time goes! I'm loosing $11 per cut. I know an increase of that will run him off. I was thinking a $5 increase next season when loosing one wont hurt so bad, if it goes that way, or I can get faster(LOL). What's you experience with this?

    Are you really gonna lose money all year before asking for an increase?If you lose the account it will save you money!I would ask for the money and not just break even money.

    If your not making a profit, why are you cutting grass?

      I still make a profit off of this account, just not what I want. So, I don't see how sitting at the house is going to save me money?

      I thought about it after posting, I'm going to see if I can get another account or two on the street out of him, he seems to know everyone really well.

        I am confused, if you are loosing $11.00 per cut, how can you be making a profit?

        If I underbid a job and it happens, I inform the client of my error, sometimes I will eat it, other times I explain what the cost will be and inform them they are under no obligation, I simply made a mistake. I can't recall a client ever getting upset.

          I would keep that client, especially since he knows a few ppl. and you only have 4 accts at the moment.

          I would do this after a cut not before, if you want to keep him, and i would do it before the next cut if your going to drop him pending outcome.

          When you talk to him just explain like you did to us, that he has some extra obstacles that take you more time. ask, "I would like to know if you think the price is fair, or do you think i'm doing it cheaper than normal. Because im pretty sure im doing it too cheap after gaining more experience about prices.

          If he says something like no its not worth more, and you want to keep him, i would simply ask him "Is there any way if you do refer me to a friend, that you dont tell them how cheap your cut is, because i realize i under bid your job, but i cant afford to cut every ones grass for such a low price."

          That way if he does tell Joe and Sally and Susan, hopefully they wont gripe about how theres is 10 bucks more than his is with a smaller lot (even though they dont think about the obstacle/difficulty..)

          Also something i do, while talking to my clients, i tell my client if they can refer me to a neighbor of theres on the block or close, ill give them both a small discount per cut. like 2 dollars or 5 dollars depending on the size and price of there place..

          If its like a 30-40 dollar cut its a 2 dollars off for refering a friend who signs a contract of atleast 6 cuts minimum. If its say a yard thats 70+ its 5 off. You can change your minimum cut contract requirement as u wish.

            I don't have much overhead, and of course no helpers. So, I apply the loss to my hourly wage and allow the company to still make it's money.

            I loose $11 if I base it on an hourly rate. If I calculate the cost by sq ft I'm dead on, without the obstructions. So, how do you guys calculate when you have obstructions? Do you ,measure the obstructions and add them to the sq ft?

                None of the properties are close in size.
                There are obstructions that I didn't think would take long to cut around, but I was wrong. If I were to answer any of your other questions it would tell you how much I charge per man hour. It's such a big secret around here, so I'm going to jump on the wagon and not say as well.

                  I'm totally at a loss right now.

                  You came to an advice forum but you are only telling people vaguely what is going on.

                  Quit being arrogant, and just answer the questions.

                  Discribe the lawn that you are referring to.
                  What was the original bid on that lawn?
                  How much time did you think it would take to mow?
                  What do you think the bid should be?
                  How much time does it actually take to mow?

                  All you say is that there are obstructions you didn't consider. Are you talking about headstones? A play structure? Some gardens? Trees? Bushes? More fencing to trim then you planned?

                  Why the big secret about your prices?
