  • First Time Charge

    Well I have been hitting the pavement for the last two weeks handing out flyers and talking to people and I now have 15 monthly contracts signed up and ready. The other day I was out mowing a lawn and the neighbor came over. He said that he was talking to the guy I was doing the lawn for and liked my prices for the monthly. He wanted to see about getting set up for his lawn. I told him I would be over as soon as I finished here.

    I went over and took a look what a mess. His yard is about the same size as the one I was doing so normally I would charge him the same price. However, his lawn has not been taken care of for a long time. I am thinking that the first couple of times doing his lawn will take me twice as long to get it back in shape. After that it would only take around 20 min. Should I give him my normal price and eat a small loss on the first two times? Or should I tell him that the first couple of times will be more?

    So are you looking at an additional 20 minutes for 2 mowings with a total of 40 minutes extra you will need to get the lawn up to par?

    Do you have an annual service agreement contract you use with your customers or no?

      New Customers

      If i am ever approached by a new customer and it could become a long term agreement; i usually take the loss. In the long run, an extra 15minutes of your time for a 6 - 12month contract is worth it. If he has trees and everything in the way, branches down, you might want to charge more as a "initial clean up" charge and he will under stand, or he might make sure that he takes care of it so that your job is in the 20 - 30 min bracket. Then you arent really out of any time.

        Yes I do have an annual contract that I am using. Yes it would be an extra 40 minutes to get the lawn up to par. Right now it is not that bad as I can fit the extra time in my schedule.

          I was thinking that same thing the 12month contract is worth it. He does have a lot of debris in the way and that is what will take my time up. I like the idea of the initial clean up charge that can just be added on the first monthly bill. I think I may try that and see what he says.

            You could play this a bunch of ways. If you think it will only take the extra 40 minutes, you can point that out to your customer, tell him how much extra that would be and then maybe follow up by saying, 'I won't bother charging you the extra fee if you agree to sign up with me as an annual customer.'

            What ever you decide to do, keep us posted and let us know how it turns out.

              I did explain to him about the extra time it would take to clean up. He understood about the extra time but wasn't really wanting to pay for a clean up charge. However, I offered to split the clean up charge and put it on his first two months of the contract. He said that would work for him and I now have him on a 12 month contract.
