  • Eye Protection

This isnt the usually safety thread about face shields.

Last night my 2 year old poked me in the eye. Woke up in pain and couldnt see much. So I go to the ER. The little girl scratched my cornea. They say scratched but I can see a damn cut. I have a full day of work tomorrow. Guess Ill be wearing sunglasses at work and a hockey mask at home from now on.

Did they say to take any steps to heal it?

DR. Said 2-5 days but even after today it feels a lot better. Before it felt like a pebble under my eyelid.

These are great learning lessons to put in the employee manual when it comes to S.O.P.'s. Can you imagine if any of these eye injuries happened to an employee?

Exactly! No job is worth potentially losing your eyesight.

My company policy is that no employee is allowed to be out of the truck without eye protection. Period. A few grumbles here and there but it's not my job to always make the popular decisions.

You guys who don't need corrective lenses are lucky. You can buy eye protection that looks good and is functional.

Everything I've looked at at the eyeglass shops is dork-central.

When I worked construction we had 'the safety guy'. He would come on the jobsite, and IF you doing something against the safety rules he escorted you to the job super, and then gave you 3 day off without pay, OR MORE. He also had the authority to fire anyone but the owner on the spot for safety violations. I have that as a company policy, it in the employee handbook, and part of the company safety training. (OSHA fines suck)

Just blink faster. Your lashes will act as a fan, blowing debris away from your eyes.

I scratched my cornea from a falling branch.(no safety glasses) I was not informed properly on treatment after hospital visit and it did not heal for 2 years. Till I found out that I should be using muro eye cream maybe 4 times a day for 3 months in order to heal it. With out treatment it can take 10 years for your cornea to heal.

I wasnt told this either. All I was giving was a antibiotic.

This is probably why it hasnt fully healed. When I wake up in the morning if I rub my eye even a little bit. Ill be in pain all day with watery eyes. I was thinking it was just the scar rubbing my eyelid when pressure was applied.

WoW! How did you ultimately find out about that?

I cut my cornea, trimming and a pebble shot into my eye.

Was blind in my left eye for what felt like an eternity. I had to put some sort of steroid in my eye, and keep it covered 24/7 (pirate).

                              It was a good experience.

I worked with a broken hand and shoulder, a useless eye, what's next!
