  • sales tax question

I'm from Ohio and I was looking for information on sales tax. I have a new lawn care business and I need to know if I need to charge sales tax? If so, how do I go about the process to obtain the right paperwork to charge tax?

    Thanks

    Hi Jason,

Over the years, I have collected sales tax in Florida, New York and South Carolina. All three set up the process when I applied for my business license.

    All three were different:
    • Florida charged only for material (this was 25 years ago)
    • New York charged sales tax on everything - material and labor
    • South Carolina charges only for material

Florida paid you for being a tax collector (you paid 75% of what you collected for the month if you paid the tax by the 15th of the following month). Again, this was 25 years ago.

New your fined you if not paid by the 15 of the following month. Interest compounds daily!

I live in Alabama but I do business in both Alabama and Georgia. I just called the state sales tax offices to get the info. In both states there is no tax collected on services. Only material. I would google your local or state sales tax office!

You should be able to contact the state about this or if you have an accountant or book keeper. Each state is different and even each township can apply a sales tax as well. So it can differ depending on where you live. Usually a local accountant can help you get started on the right track with this.
