that is because they automatically think just because they found some low baller that you are ripping them off and are a theif.

we are all one low baller away from losing our work all together.

a town where i grew up had a bunch of old landscape businesses that pretty much had the lock down on the area and then they all jumped on the illegal worker band wagon.
fast forward a dozen years to today and these wetbacks have started their own businesses in the same town and took their work away and half the big companies are out of business.

these guys litterally took over the town and they really got their grip tight on the area when the economy went south.
why?, because they were low balling.

Bahahah thats what has happened around here too. I Do either prepay or a contract that requires the full balance payed in event of cancellation. Yeah alot of people run from my contract and thats ok as long as they prepay a few mows out

I know, Right? I'm not saying I would have done the yard for $20 thats why I bid it at $30, but she didnt even call to tell me. It's not hard to do. I'm ok with losing a job (kinda). If someone will do it cheaper, they won't do it for long if they work for money, I just dont see how hard it could have been to call me and say, " Thanks Matt, for your service but we needed to try and find a cheaper rate, if you can match it we'll stay with you, if not we'll have to use this other service". No hard feeling, no mentioning it on certain forums, just go about the day. Just makes you wanna go back and scalp the yard!
Water balloons full of round up, a drive by a midnight,,,,,,,, not that I have ever done that but sometimes it really looks like a good thought

Which brings up a good point about being reliable and marketing that you are reliable.

A flyer or door hanger headline could read 'Tired of your current lawn care provider being unreliable?'

'Call us! We'll be there like clockwork.'

Or some variation there of could be used all through out the season.

The problem is what happens in the growth stages when you aren't the guy doing the work? Or a customer asks about additional work you don't offer and you have to refuse because you don't use subs?

I mow for everyone from strangers to neighbors to friends, and I require they all pre-pay. Saves me a ton of headache. I just explain to them that I've been screwed in the past and have to protect myself. This was only an issue for 1 customer who ended missing her billing date every month for 3 months and then fired me without notice because she said I wasn't sending her the bills. It won't be an issue for anyone who isn't looking to screw you from the beginning. Plus it is easier to manage your cash flow because you are 30 days ahead of your expenses with your revenue. Good luck.

I don't do tree work but will refer then to a company I trust. No subs means you don't hire me and never see me again. I work on every job I do, even if I have helpers. I don't understand why anyone would not offer lawn maintenance services, I can only guess you were talking about tree work.
Things I don't want to do I rate high and hope they go get someone else

There are a million outdoor services that don't fall under mowing grass.

My point was what happens in your growth when you send a crew to perform the work after you've made the sale? You said you have employees so you probably aren't far from this crossroads. FWIW I can't wait to be out of the field........
