Does anyone know where I can get a domain? We are a new business and we need to keep cost at a minimum, but we also want people to be able to find us. Our community is mostly a summer community, so the people that will be looking for our services will be looking from other areas in the state or even from out of state and we want to be easily accessable via a website. Any help that you can give us would be great.

I would use GODADDY.com, they are fairly inexpensive for domains and they do have build it yourself websites.GODADDY.COM

1and1.com is my pick. I have all of my websites hosted through them. They are running a great promotion atm as well. Check them out...any help you need let me know.

How has the customer support been for you both for these web hosting companies?

I know even I get stuck a lot when using different web hosting companies. Trying to figure out how their system works etc.

Have you had any problems in the past and if so, were you able to get it resolved with their support?

GoDaddy.com for me was a nightmare when it came to customer support. Transferring domains or changing you hosting package would be like pulling teeth. Every time I got someone on the phone, all they did was read pre-written text from a screen. Nothing got resolved either.

1and1.com on the other hand is fantastic. You get knowlegeable people on the other end, and they work things out with you. Not 'Try this and if that doesn't work then call us back'...arg. They will be getting my business for the years to come.

***Disclaimer*** These are my opinions and mine alone. This is in no regard to badmouth any hosting company

LOL this has been my experience too! It was basically you are on your own. I just barely was able to get stuff up and running with them but most people just don't know anything about web development or hosting and therefore I am sure it would be a nightmare.

How long have they been in business for? How do they charge for their support?

well the last thing you want to do is let your domain expire. Your luck will be that someone nabs it and tries to sell it back to you...it really does happen. So don't let it expire.

What you can do is transfer your domain to a different hosting company. You see, yahoo, 1and1, godaddy and other hosting companies don't own your domain, or even sell it to you. They are an affiliate of a much larger organization that they pay to be allowed to sell domains.

In order to transfer domains you will need a conf number from your existing hosting company that registered your domain. Then you need to accept a few emails from the registrar office. The process can take up to one week.

Very True! This has happened to a couple of people I know and they wound up paying thousands of dollars to buy it back.
