  • You are a motivator.

I would like to share something that happened to me recently.

A couple friends and I spent last weekend camping and mountain biking. After two solid days on the trails, we decided to make one last ride on the paved road up a mountain local to the camping area.

None of us are phenomenal athletes. We ride mainly for fun but we are in decent shape and up for most any challenge. At the top of this mountain is a recreational lake where people swim and have picnics. While we rode, cars overtook us on the way up and passengers looked at us like we were nuts to make that ride.

At the top, people who overtook us in their cars earlier stared at us not believing we actually reached the top. Out of all the people staring, this one kid came over to us. He was a very out of shape kid...maybe had never done any exercise in his life. He was amazed that we had completed the ride.

We chatted for awhile and told him how much fun it is to challenge your body and get it into shape to be able to do things like that. We also told him how fun it is to ride downhill after making the climb.

As we left, we could almost see a flood of motivation flow over the kid. It was as if he was immediately motivated to get his body into shape. The simple fact that the three of us rode that hill may have set in motion the motivation for that kid to start exercising and change his life.

On the ride down, I thought of the GopherForum message board and all the people who visit here. We all have the desire to expand our businesses and advance our lives. We are all at different points in our journey but no matter where you are in your journey, you never know who is looking up to you.

As you go about your daily work, think about this: someone is looking up to you. Someone is thinking of you as a role model. It might be one of your customers or a customer's neighbor. That person wonders if he/she could ever be so lucky as to start a lawn care business, too. That person admires you for being brave enough to do what you do.

It's fascinating to think that by just going about your business...doing what you do naturally, you might be the motivating factor in someone else's life.

Start a profitable lawn care business.

That is a fascinating story! Any pictures from it that you could show us?

Motivation is a fascinating topic too. I think we all find things out of our reach until we see others do it, then it gives us pause to reflect and say maybe we can do it too.

One of the things I love about the forum is that you can talk with someone that is more advanced then you and you can find inspiration in their words. You can also see people and their businesses grow over time.

You just can't read all this stuff and not feel like I CAN DO IT TOO!

It makes me think also of the backflip bike and dirtbike stunts. At one point, those tricks were not even in the realm of being possible. When I first saw it I was thinking it was fake but then I was like OMG! That is freakin AWESOME and now I believe there are double backflips being performed on bikes.

    It's mind boggling.

So if you are gonna dream, dream big!

      ever notice?

I just thought I'd point something out, being new to this forum. I've checked out other forums lately to try to educate myself with this new business. They are pretty much full of bragging, argueing, putting people down, and generally just pissing contests of who has the best mower or who can mow the the best stripes in a yard. There is absolutely nothing useful to me as a newby that is going to help me in my business. You guys are so much different. Do you really think I could've posted my crappy equipment on my intro page or admitted that I have no clue what I'm doing on those forums? I'm really psyched about this business and its awesome that you guys actually motivate instead of talking down to rookies. We all have experiences in different things but when you are excited and knowledgeable about this business, it shows and its contagious. You guys could've talked down to the kid at the top of the hill and there would've been a totally different outcome. Its the little things we do everyday and the respect that we show people that makes differences.

        Hi Andy,

Very good point. I think the one thing most of us on the forum here have in common is that we are trying to always learn. I would like to think of it as a holistic approach to business and to life. Possibly even a Zen of it. Where you are trying to figure out the bigger picture one step at a time.

I am sure you have a lot you could share with us from your experiences through life thus far and we'd love to hear it.
