  • How much did you grow per year?

    Here's a thought that may help some that are teetering on whether or not they should get into the business or not. To give an idea of the type of growth that may be seen.

    How many weekly customers did you service each year you have been in business? One time customers would be mulch jobs, hedge trims etc...

    In my case we are entering our 3rd year,

    1st Year: 9 weekly customers, 7 one time customers
    2nd Year: 24 weekly customers, 27 one time customers
    3rd Year:
    4th Year:
    5th Year:

    Looking back now, did you feel you had some customer goals for your first year and second year? How did your goals compare with the reality of what happened?

    If you would have known how many customers you were going to get, would you still have gotten into the business?

      I expected the start up to be slow. I wasn't sure how I would handle it at the time so slow start up was actually good in my case, it gave me time to learn more about the business and what customers look for. This year my goal is to get to 40 weekly customers.

        It seems that there is a range a business can grow without it having the problem of imploding on itself. The range tends to be between 10% to 20% a year.

        The first couple of years may not follow this range because you may be functioning with a lot of unused time and infrastructure but once you get a full schedule, your growth show be slow, steady, and sustainable.

          My company doubled for years till now we grow by 12 to 20 percent a year I wish I could still double but that would be hard to manage my first year me and a partner picked up close two 200 yards are first year then we split the business and went our separate ways

              Each one I still have today. So I guess we must be doing something right. These were my first and they pay the same as when we first started them as I view them as the ones that gave us a chance so I keep them the same.

                That's cool. This is my first year starting my own business. I would be happy with those results.

                  First year 10 weekly customers
                  Second 18 weekly 2 one time
                  Third 32 weekly 5 one time....plus whatever else I can pick up. 10 yards were an add on of another business. Third year is this year so there is the possiblity to get more, we have received 4 contracts for this year, and have submitted several other just waiting on the mowing season to get here.
