Hi Lani,

Have you seen our free e-book, "Stop Lowballing"? It is also in an audio version. There is a chapter called "Getting Commercial Accounts without commercial references." (http://www.gophergraphics.com/forum/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST&f=1&t=4379&st=&&#entry19778) I think it might help.

Hello everyone,

*I would like to introduce my company, Good Grounds Lawn Care Service located in Upper Marlboro, MD. My brother and I went into business in November of last year. I have been mowing lawns since I was 13 yrs. old (I am now 26). I am very excited and have met a lot of wonderful lco owners who have given me some great info. This is a wonderful site with members who provide tons of helpful info and support in so many areas of this business.

PNP Lawn Care,

Was started in 2005. How I got started was was by accident. I have some horses and I need a good mower to mow where I keep them. My GF at the time said why don`t we mow some yards and let that money pay for the mower. Well its all been up hill sense then. Been mowing for 3 years now. Trying to build the company as I grow. You can see some my photos in the other post of a truck that I have been working on trying to get it ready for this mowing season.

Hey guys, Todd Fontenot,Dixie Turf Service, Douglasville, GA. I started this business back in 1997 after getting out of the Air Force. I was looking for a non-corporate job in which I could work with my sons and do something I enjoyed. I sought God's direction and this is the way He led me. I started cutting my aunt's grass on Saturday's, now I'm taking care of about 60 accounts with part-time help from my son's. http://www.gophergraphics.com/forum/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.gophergraphics.com/forum/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/newbie.gif

My plans for the year are to focus on getting the right kind of customers for my business. In the past I have taken all customers to make ends meet (My wife and I have nine wonderful children!). But this year I am raising my prices to filter out the customers who are not committed to the success of my business as much as I am committed to the success of their lawn. I grow my business two ways. Word of mouth and an on-line contractor referral site, "Angie's List".

Steve
05-01-2007, 05:35 PM
Hi moewer,

Welcome to our forum!

How has the angie's list service worked for you?

Have you been doing any other forms of marketing this year or do you plan on it?

moewer
05-01-2007, 09:41 PM
The "Angie's List" was slow at first (@3 yrs ago). But about a year ago I started getting some serious referrals. I am graded on every job I do by the Angie's List member (who has to pay to be a member). So it keeps me very alert to the quality of the job. I have not done any other forms of marketing and do not plan to. The Atlanta Metro area is constantly growing and I already feel like I have a tiger by the tail!

The animated banner looks awesome. I'd love to have one.
I started my business about one year ago. Picked up a used mower from the flea market along with some other used equipment (blower, weed eater, etc.) I started by going door to door and handing out business cards. If they weren't there I would just leave one on the door.
Within a couple of days I had people calling and business was starting to stack up. I now have new equipment, and work full time. I have commercial accounts as well as residential.
To this day, I haven't spent a dime on advertising (except for the business cards=Vistaprint.com-500 for 4.95) I guess that is a good sign that the lawn care business is a healthy one to be in!

Welcome to our forum! Do you have any advise for the new lawn care startup?

Well, I found that the majority of my customers I get aren't happy with their current company. If you do a good job and show up when you say you will be there, then you will do just fine.
As far as big plans, I am working on getting my applicators license so I can spray without worrying about getting hit with a $1,000 fine! In my area, we have 2 agg. cops that drive around and watch landscapers/gardeners to try and catch them spraying.
I am taking Horticulture classes at the local college (water gardening and plant Ident.)
I am also finishing up on my larger trailer, 6x12, since I have outgrown the one I am currently using. It served me great for a year or so and now it is time to pass it off to someone else.
Well that is what I have been up to and I look forward to answering any questions. Thanks for all great resources this site offers. I think it was a great find.
BTW- I downloaded the Gopher software trial and think it is totally great. I will be purchasing it as soon as I can.

I like to do lawn work so I am trying to make a business out of it. small at first (of course) and work my way up to commercial jobs with contracts. Hi Ernie,

Can you share with us some advise your father has told you about running a lawn care business?

Ernest
06-30-2007, 07:47 PM
well I one things was don't be afraid to tell the customer no, if you can not handle the job. It is better not to do the job than doing it unsatisfactory and making the customer upset. brownie points never hurt either, if the customer likes the way you take care of a particular area on the lawn take an extra five to ten minutes on it. most of the time it is the highlight of the lawn and it stands out anyway. I could keep going but most of it is common sense anyway, (like tire inflation so you don't get the stairway effect). and just plain general knowledge that he has showed me over the years, things that give the lawn that special look.

So here's my story, I have been cutting grass since I am about 10 yrs old.. started out with a new push mower that my dad purchased in 2000 for me to use. I got approched to start cutting the neighbors through a property management business to cut the grass next door that was for sale (that we now bought). And then I got asked to do 2 properties for that same company and then it started to kick in. I could do this for a living.. so then I was in high school then and yeah my dream started to come true until last year (2006) when I started my business after working for the town and a few companies in the big city (1 hr from here) and go ripped off and didn't get payed (long story) http://www.gophergraphics.com/forum/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/offtopic.gif Anyways... i started to talk about it to my friends starting in grade 11/12 and when i was in class.. i would do little projects and i would do them on my future business that I would have so it would help me see the business side. That's where my dream got started then I never looked back.. and started my own and never regret doing it. I would of loved to started this long time ago. So I say.. the younger you are.. the better it is.

Applied for a grant of 3000$ for my business to help me out.. helped payed off the loan of 5000$ with my local bank with my business plan.

Dad helping me out by lending me his truck for now until i can afford my own. Then i bought a little 5'X8' trailer to carry my tractor and my push mower along (i live in a little town of about 3000 population in the 3 districts I have).

I have mailed out like 1500 surveys to start to see if there was a demand and the ones that came back were all positive so I started that summer (2006). And the calls kept coming. I post flyers with phone tear offs and put them in the local sotres.. it seems to work pretty good (Microsoft Publisher rocks !!!)

I am a computer wizz so I created myself a website for the business. I studied web design at school. Graduated and returned to study business.
Just in Time Yard Services (http://www.jitys.ca)

If you want more info, just let me know.. I posted all my equipment / services below.

I hope I inspired someone to start their own business. Oh by the way.. i'm only 21.. started when I was 20.

I offer the following services :

Grass cutting & trimming
Brush cutting
Spring and Fall cleanup
Fertilizing
Hedge trimming

These following services will become available in the future

Weed control (getting my licence for next year - hopefully)

Hi Justin!

Great Story!

Could you tell us more about how you got your grant? Many lawn care business owners know nothing about this.

Also what did you ask in your survey? Do you still have it? Could you post it?

What would you have done differently if you could start all over?

What was the biggest surprise you ran into and how did you deal with it?

Thanks! and thank you for the picture too!

Well the grant I got it through the local business centre. It's a grant specified for students that want to start a Summer business between the age of 15 and 29 yrs old. They give you the $1500 to start then they give you the other $1500 at the end when you successfully finish the training/program.

I still got my survey somewhere... the less question the better. But the questions have to be pretty specific. I had a few questions people didn't answer because they weren't sure if the question was per cut or per month (i was asking how much money were they wiilling to spend on grass cutting)...

If i would start all over.... I would have bought a better trailer. I tought of buying a cheaper trailer that would save me money !!! WWWWWWWrong !!! I have re-wired that trailer 3x already and needs to be rewired again. I had to get it reinforced because it wasn't solid enough.

I got the chance to try out a demo commercial mower that helped me out when my tractor needed to be fixed...

Other than that I love my job and I wouldn't regret doing anything else... Gotta love being your own boss at 21 http://www.gophergraphics.com/forum/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.gophergraphics.com/forum/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

It's not really called training.. it's just a program to help you out if you have any questions.. we would have our meeting with the regional business centre every 2 weeks and they would ask us to fill out information (online journal) and other stuff like that

To me.. it was pretty easy since I am learning commerce at school

My love for working with my hands started very young when I would work outside with my grandmother all day on her lawn, flower beds and vegetable garden. About 10 years ago I was ready to go full throttle into the lawn care business and let some very negative people in my life tell me I could never have my own lawn care business. So, I didn't but I never stopped working for fun for myself and my family. Then a very close friend of mine that worked for 10+ years for another lawn care company told me I could do anything I wanted to and I thought long and hard about it again. Then another friend who owns his own lawn care and landscaping business told me to just do it because he could see a light in my eyes when I talked about it with him and so here I am starting it for myself.
Best advice I could give and I consider myself new to running a lawn care business is just be yourself. If your yourself and being outdoors and working outdoors is in your soul then you will never be wrong in what your doing. Now that doesn't mean you won't make mistakes because we are all human. Go out there and sell them you. You are your company and that is what they are getting when all is said and signed.
So go out and go door to door and let them see you in all your glory. I go out knocking on doors anytime I can because there is so much more out there that I can do and help.
If you ever doubt yourself take some time off and relax and see what your gut tells you. Even if that time off is ten minutes in rush hour traffic while your enjoying a great song on the radio. I have been fortunate to meet some wonderful people so far in the lawn care business and I know they are gifted in everything I see them do.
Also, there is always something new that can be taught to you. Take classes if they are available and enjoy them. You never know when that knowledge will come in handy.
Lastly, I would always remind people to treat their customers how they would want to be treated if the tables were turned.
Hope this helps and I hope everyone has a great green day!!!!

Isn't it amazing how people around you can keep you from exploring your dreams? What ever happened to the people who told you, you couldn't or shouldn't start your business? Do you still associate with them? If so how has their perspective changed?

What advice do you have for someone who finds themselves surrounded with similar negative energy? How does one deal with that?

Clean Lawn
07-14-2007, 10:39 PM
Very rarely do I speak with the people whom spread that negativity to my life. I look back now and wonder how then I didn't see how negative they were about everything. Life goes by so fast if you don't jump in and do what you know is right, then before you know it then its over. The worst thing someone can do to themselves is eat themselves up with regret.
If someone is out there everyday mowing lawns and making their dreams come true then more power to them. But if at the end of the day you don't feel fullfilled then something is definately wrong. Then would be the time to rethink what your doing.
Trying to break a cycle of negative people isn't an easy task. The best thing I could say is go talk to a complete stranger that is already in the lawn care business and tell them everything you feel about it (what I did with my friends). They will be the ones least likely to lie to you or be negative about it, to you. If your still not sold on the idea then maybe your not ready 100% to go into the lawn care business for yourself. You have to be able to go out there and hear "no" so many time you want to never hear the word again before that "yes" happens. You feel like a child on christmas morning all over again. That is what I love, that feeling but I love it even more after I see that feeling in a beautiful lawn that I help my client to create.
You can also talk to other professionals here on the forums, e-mail, instant message... so many different ways to talk to people so that your 100% before you take the dive.
Those negative people rarely speak to me. They know they did everything they could to hold me back and couldn't face up to that and say they were wrong. Even to this day they still say I am wrong and I will fall on my face and come back to them saying you were right all along. Well I have received enough "thank you's" to know I am right and this is where I am going to stay. http://www.gophergraphics.com/forum/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Tell us what's next in your future plans? Where do you go from here? What do you feel is your next biggest challenge?

Clean Lawn

[/QUOTE]Tell us what's next in your future plans? Where do you go from here? What do you feel is your next biggest challenge?

Well because CleanLawn is a new company we will continue working to gain more residential lawn care service contracts. Then as the summer nears its end we will push for fall clean-ups and offer fall specials for landscaping, aerating, grass seeding, fertalization,etc...In such a large area as Hampton Roads is in Virginia, working continuously to get the CleanLawn name out there so our customers and potential customers will know which company to call when they need any lawn services at all. I believe it will be at least two years before our name is known in the hampton roads community.
I will continue to take classes as they are available through Tidewater Community College and better my knowledge of this wonderful industry for both business and pleasure. I will encourage any future employess to do the same.
I am working on several different referal programs for CleanLawn. One of them when we gain each customer after our first service of their property, the notes I took during that service I put together in one of my homemade "thank you cards". I like to let my customers know my thoughts and give them the opportunity to decide if they agree with them and want me to futher making their lawn the best on their block by more services or that they might wish to persue these avenues themselves. I give each customer some of my business cards with their names on the back of them. Each card that is returned to me that bring CleanLawn a new client, that customer gains a $5.00 credit towards their services. There is no number to the amount of credit they can earn with us during their contract each year with us.
Another I am working on is for future employees of my company. Each contract that a employee brings me that he or she gained throughout their own means. They will get 10-15% from that total contract as a bonus each month. So, yes if on Friday Johnny goes home and on Monday morning he comes back with 5 new clients then Johnny gets a nice little bonus the next month. I feel it encourages employees to want to help CleanLawn to grow and it gives them something back for their added efforts.
But right now that is where I stand on the lawn service business. I know there are probably a million more things that I will do throughout the rest of the summer and another million I will research and create for the company but I want to make this the best lawn service and landscaping business in the Hampton Roads area and I know with some time and hard work it will be.

Hi everyone!

I started my business at the beginning of the season this year (2007). It is called Kevin O'Neil's Lawn Service. I've been through school for environmental horticulture, nursery operations & various business classes. I love what I do for a living!!! I have about 25 monthly accounts and I'm averaging 1 new account every week. Those #'s don't include one-time jobs (ie: pressure washing, tree trimming/removal, sod installation, landscape installations, etc). I am VERY HAPPY!!! I would very much appreciate an animated banner ad. http://www.gophergraphics.com/forum/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thankyou.gif

Hello everyone! My name is Steve and my business name is Handy Home Medics LLC. "Critical Care For Lawns & Homes"

This is our first season in business and things have been very busy right out of the chute! Too busy to tell the truth. Still managing my two full time Paramedic jobs at night and this during the day.

How did we get started? I already know what 80+ hrs. a week of emergency medicine pays (not enough). We wanted to try something that could leverage our time and didn't require being bled or vomited on.

We're very active throughout Monmouth and Union Counties in NJ. I found this website today and am addicted already. I can't believe that this type of resource is available!

Hi everyone!!!! My name is Randi and I just started a new lawn care service in atlanta, ga. I just started like 2 months ago. I am starting out with as little overhead as possible (still working on paying off the personal debt which is why I started) . I am just using a Toro mulcher 21", a homelite 2, and a toro weedeater, and a PT Cruiser and a Kia Sportage to haul the stuff in. I do work a full time job and I am in real estate school so I do it on my own schedule that is why I LOVE it so much. Hope to be able to quit the full time job at QT sometime soon. I have about 20 clients with about 5 of them are regular biweekly ones and the others are on email when you need it basis (yuck but has helped a lot). Well I know a couple of people who make good money doing lawn care and I had a lawn mower, weed eater, and blower so I figured I'd go to work. I've been in business for about a month and a half and I've got 4 clients. I could use a few more. Haha

Welcome to our forum!

What kinds of marketing have you been doing to attract new customers?
Well I started some flyers Last year and posted an add on the paper last spring. I must say the add really paid off. I got most of my clients through it. I only posted for 28 days in march and whent form 5 to over 20 lawns. Some accounts through word of mouth as well. Now i can say i have 28 lawns. Its amazing how fast the clientell picked up. No matter how much competition there is here in New Jersey, Happy customers remain loyal customers! Next season i will take this company to a whole new level,God willing. I'm looking on putting another add on the paper and 1000 door hangers designed by PLAN-IT GRAPHICS. ETC...OHH! What do you think you would say would be your marketing hook? Your USP (Unique Sales Proposition)? What would you say makes you stand out from others and is that important to you?

LOUROCK
10-24-2007, 09:53 PM
"OUR ATTENTION TO DETAIL IS SECOND TO NONE" Is one of the hooks i like to use on a flyer combined with some other slogans I have around. I think it is important to know how to make a customer feel like your the guy they are looking for. Very important technic to aquire to utilize out on the field. I strongly suggest good comunication skills for anyone starting a business. http://www.gophergraphics.com/forum/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Hi tjgray,

Thanks for joining our forum! What got you to start your lawn care business?

I have actually been a member of this forum for about 3 years now but I normally just read and soak up the knowledge http://www.gophergraphics.com/forum/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

For 15 years lawn and landscape was just the husbands gig and I was the girl who couldn't grow a cactus...

Then my husband got into two traffic accidents in the space of a few months in the company truck which is not hard to do here in the ol crazy DFW Metroplex...

But because of that the company insurance dropped my husband and his boss reluctantly told him he had to let him go.

He was really cool though and when my husband told him he had long been thinking of starting his own lawn company he told him that if he went and got his final licenses and some business insurance that he would put him back to work sub-contracting.

Which we did and that first year my husband's ex-boss kept us so busy it was like we never stopped working for him. *We didn't mind though. *It kept us busy and because he didn't mind if we grew our own customer base we managed to gain a handful of customers ourselves.

The second year we learned a valuable lesson when we arrived at the office for the start of a normal day and found out that my husbands ex-boss had sold his company to True Green. *that lesson - Don't put all your eggs in the same basket...

It was a shocker and we wondered what we were going to do. *My husband had the option of going to work for True Green but he had gotten his start with True Green and although he learned some valuable experience he also learned that he didn't want to work for True Green.

So we decided to just jump on out there and start gaining new customers...

This year was our 4th year and we actually have gained about 50 customers and have started feeling like a real lawn and landscape company http://www.gophergraphics.com/forum/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

We still do a bit of sub-contracting now and again but it is if we have the time and the goal is to eventually have enough customers of our own to where we don't have to sub-contract.

Next year I think we will do it!!

Thank you so much for my graphic! *I love it!! *But, can I make a small request please...I do apologise, I really hate to add extra work for anyone, but I wasn't thinking that I wanted to use the graphic for next year...

When you have the time could you possibly change the 4 years to 5 years. *I sure would appreciate it http://www.gophergraphics.com/forum/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

You guys are just such a valuable resource for me and have given me so many ideas and taught me a wealth of knowledge.

It is websites like this and kind folks that I have met while using them that has helped the girl who 4 years ago couldn't grow cactus to being the green industry professional that I am well on my way to becoming today!!

We couldn't have done it without ya http://www.gophergraphics.com/forum/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

WOW What a great story! So when TruGreen took over, you had to start with 0 customers again?

What kind of things did you do and do you do today to market your business and gain new customers?

tjgray
11-04-2007, 01:16 AM
That banner is just perfect. *Thank you so very much for making it and then fixing it for me!! *It really does look good on both our website http://www.theothersidelawncompany.com
and our myspace
http://www.myspace.com/theothersidelawncompany * (http://www.myspace.com/theothersidelawncompany)

We learned a valuable lesson that day True Green bought out our ex boss/contractor....

We were so content to just being busy working that first year that we did not take any time to market our own lawn company so while we didn't have to start over with 0 customers we only had about 10 or so...mostly family and friends.

We actually felt kind of lucky though as the other employees of our ex boss where faced with work for True Green or look for another job...we actually had The Other Side to fall back on....such as it was...

That second year was tough trying to stay busy and pay the bills but we got through it and with each year that has passed we have only gotten bigger, more experienced, more equipment, more customers, more knowledgable etc etc etc.

I do keep us on a very tight marketing budget and most of our customers have been earned by good ol fashioned word of mouth but some of the marketing resources that I have used to gain us new customers:

Creating a website and adding paypal capabilities to it so our customers can pay with a credit card *I have about 10 customers so far using this to pay their monthly invoices that I email to them each month....eventually I want to get to the point where we are emailing all of our customers monthly invoices verses leaving some at the time of service or mailing them out in the mail...perhaps even eventually setting up a program that notifies a customer when their monthly statement is ready for viewing*

Running an ad in one of the area newspapers annual publication "Metroplex Living" but that was a waste because we didn't gain any customers from it.

Another marketing resource that has gained us several customers Angieslist.com This is a website devoted to helping homeowners find honest and dependable contractors. *It works mainly by word of mouth...one of our customers wrote up a great review on our company and that started the ball rolling. *Just this year we probably gained 10 or so customers and have a whole list of great reviews that other members can read. *

Being on Angieslist has cost us nothing but they do have a handful of marketing resources they offer at a cost. *One of them is getting your add in their monthly newsletter they send out to all of their members. *The cost is not very much and something I am considering doing in the future.

I also designed and ordered for a small cost 500 great looking postcards. *I plan on sending them out next spring using a mailing list I have been compiling *and yes I will do my own mailing*

And fliers oh my goodness have we passed out a ton of fliers over the last four years. *I just order the cheap black and white ones and we pass them out whenever we have free time.

Most recently I have been inspired by TeamGopher again and some other really talented folks in the green industry to finally quit saying I need to make our lawn company a myspace *I have had a personal myspace for several years* and utilize some of the great marketing tools that myspace offers...and finally made one. *I am pleased with it and have a whole slew of ideas on what I want to do with it.

Even though for the longest time the green industry was just the husbands gig and I couldn't grow a cactus...what I did bring to the table was 10 years of corporate marketing experience. *Basically I have just used what I have learned in corporate on a much smaller scale to grow our lawn company...

So far so good!!

Steve

You are the best Steve!! Thank you again http://www.gophergraphics.com/forum/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

You really like the name? I do too!

We tossed around Basset Lawn Care or Basset Lawn and Landscape. We also considered Hound Dog Lawn Care but my husband decided that while he was ok with centering our lawn company around our love for animals he did not want it to be one specific breed...

Sooo then I started thing about things like For Paws Lawn Care and Four Paws Lawn Care but my son who works with us suggested Green Paws and well I really like that.

It's going to be a lot of work to change our name but I think better to do it now when we are still small and in the slow season verses right in the middle of a busy season when we get a cease and desist letter from the other company.

Which may never happen BUT I am just not real comfortable having such a similiar name as another lawn company so close to us plus I have long wanted to do more to help animals in need and I am thinking with the new company name we might advertise that we will donate a percent of our annual net to animal charity such as ASPCA or maybe our local animal shelter which will make me feel good personally...

I actually went to our states comptroller page and found out the the other company incorporated in 2003 so I do think that if they wanted to send us a cease and desist they could...of course I actually found 4 lawn companies named different variations of The Other Side doing business in Texas another that is pretty close to us as well in Fort Worth.

I am just trying to come up with something a little different then what everyone else is doing...

I have done several searches for Green Paws including one on our state comptrollers page and have found nothing soooo I think we maybe safe to use the name.

I wish I would have known four years ago what I am learning now and we probably would have never gone with The Other Side BUUUUT ya live and ya learn.

So what do ya'll think? Original enough? Have you ever seen or heard of a lawn company named Green Paws?

I kinda like the play off of Green Thumb too http://www.gophergraphics.com/forum/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Steve I have not forgotten your request to share some of my marketing ideas but right now I am sooo busy with all thats involved in changing our name...

I am working on a logo now

I have secured greenpawslawncare.com, greenpawslawncare.org and greenpawslawncare.info and am in the process of updating the website *especially the about us section*.

I have to update all of our invoices, business cards, and marketing materials with the new logo we decide on...

I have to apply for a new license with the new name. I am definate going to incorporate this time so that I can better secure the name.

We have to update Texas Department of Agriculture with the new name.

We have to go and get another DBA and open new accounts.

I have to call our insurance agent and change our name with them.

And we have to let all of our current customers know about the name change which I think can be easily done with our annual begining of the season letter...

I am sure there are some things I am not thinking about...

For those of you that have gone through a name change can you give me any advice. Am I leaving anything out?

I think we have enough time to pull it all together for the new season but I have never done anything like this before...I want to make sure I am covering all of our bases.

Ha ha should I start a new post for this http://www.gophergraphics.com/forum/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Hi Tara,

It sounds like you are doing everything right.

I like how you are going to tie in your business with your love of pets. You know you could come up with some creative marketing ideas for next year where you could help animals in some way. Maybe on your website you could post local animals that are looking for a home. You could also make quick videos you could post on youtube of the animals. Then people in your area would know to look to your site for such information.
Why not have a forum on your site to discuss such issues?
Show off your pet pictures.

I think all of this will really help you bond with your community and that is always a good thing.

You might want to consider offer the pet clean up services as well because that would work under your business name.

Can you make another post and talk to us a little about your interest in bassets? How did this come about? How involved are you in this interest? How many bassets do you have? I think that will help me come up with more marketing ideas for you.

I'd be glad to tell you about evergreen. We havent really gotten any business from it, or anyhting like that. It's just been a blessing though. We mow a Chaplain in Iraq's lawn while he is overseas for free and feel that it is the least we can do for someone fighting for our freedom. He is very thankful and sends us letters updating us about the goings on in Iraq, but other than that, we recieve no compensation. We just feel we owe it to the guys fighting over there.

Currently, we only have one evergreen account, but would like to have 2 or 3. Thanks for the awesome banner. Its my signature for all of my other forum posts now. Thanks!

Hi Jewel,

Merry Christmas to you too!

There are many ways to come up with a business name. You can do it by geographic location by using your town name. You can talk about your quality or price. You can also create a name based on a personal interest you have and that can be the most fun way.

Do you have any personal interests you are really passionate about that you could take and use to help create a name?

You have been in business for quite a few years! Do you have any advice to new start up lawn care business owners?
The best thing I can pass along is not to make the common mistake of selling your services below market value. New business owners often get flustered by not getting the amount of business they want and start lowering prices thinking this will boost the customer base. It may do that, but you are working for free and just spinning your wheels and not moving forward. It is better to have a handfull of decent paying customers than to have more at break even. I have watched this area get lower and lower over the years. Mowing prices here are the same or lower than they were in 1985 when I started.

Hello, my name is Jesse and I own A&J Landscaping.(AJLandscaping.net) I just started out 6months ago, but I am already doing well. I could use more marketing/advertising ideas though.

I have to say, this site is GREAT! I have used so much already in the 1-2 days I have been here. 2008 is going to be better yet because of this place... http://www.gophergraphics.com/forum/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

Well, I needed to update my stash of bidsheets, envelopes, e-mail, etc. and you have alot of good examples here. Some of the other things I used were the forums. Alot of good reading material in there as well. Its just the little things that are making everyone more happy with my business. My employees like my new invoices, contracts, etc.

Hi everyone. My name is Dave and I own a landscaping company in Toronto Canada named Top Notch Lawn Care.

Ive been running my company for only a few years. I am my only employee, get help from a buddy when I really need it.

I started from the back off my brothers old jeep. Now I have two trucks, a plow, a large snow ex salter, a 32inch ferris walk behing mower, echo trimmers and two powerful leaf blowers.

I made some money in 2007 but lost a ton on the plow and salter. I really want to do well in this industry.

I would be very grateful if I could get tips on marketing and saving money at the same time. Also getting commerial cutting bids and customer retention. I want to cut lawns for 50 per residentail visit. I do quality so I hope I can charge this...I will accept and feed back.

I want to learn. Thanks

Oh Ya.. could I get a Banner? Thanks.

Hi Dave

Sounds as if you have a good start, Welcome to Gopher.

There are a lot of marketing materials in the download setion at the top (door hangers, customer letters, contracts) there you can find things you can edit for your own use.

Saving money is all up to you.

Marketing is how you present your business and the areas you market. As you have proabibly found out area is the key factor, marking to blue color will get you less than marketing to upper class. You will need to set up a budget for marketing. Take some time read through and watch some of the video's throught the site, this will help you with questions you may have right off.

Good Luck and Welcome Here @ Gopher

Love the banners on here! Look great and really stand out! You had made me two last year, the grass one and the snow plowing one. I got a new phone number for my business, is there any way that you can either make me two new ones, or tell me how to change the numbers on there? Thanks very much! Heres the info if you need it to make a new one

Sorry for all the posts, do you have any other banners related to the industry that can be customized? Even if they are not free, I will pay within reason. Thanks
