Hey guys,

Well heres a short intro about myself...
Im 26, Beautiful Wife, and 3 awesome kids 1,6,8.
I had my own mortgage company for the last 5 yrs.
It was awesome financially but i never got to see my fam..

so i shut it down in feb07...

since then i have been spending 24 7 with my family...

but now its time to get back to work...

I m love making my grass the best in the neighborhood...

that obsession has turned into me wanting to have my own landscaping company. i really have a passion for it.


I know its mid season right now, but i would really like to start it now!!!! My brother just left for the army and will be back in november and i would love to have it up and running and have him become a business partner.

I am very familiar with direct mail and websites, but something i didnt see that worked in the mtg industry is talk about auto dialers...

so my question to you guys is... would an automated message work for getting new clients!http://www.gophergraphics.com/forum/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

i have an 20 line autodialer or access to a service that would do 50,000 calls in 1hr.

it would leave a brief message under 30 secs. or a message that prompts them to press 1 to speak directly to me.

what do you guys think!

also i would like to start this biz just like if i had no money and needed to generate some serious income fast. (8k a month)

i would like to document everyday for the next 90 days and hopefully sell an ebook that anyone can relate to step by step!


in ri theres only 1 mill population

one other question...

what would u guys recommend for startup equipment?

im not looking to reinvent the wheel!!!
and i will take all comments seriously and will try to get this off the ground no later than next week!

Is an auto-dialer legal? Is the list cross referenced with the federal don't call list?

If it was ok to use, I'd try it out. Why not? Have a quick sales pitch and then ask the listener to leave their address if they would like a free estimate and maybe some other teaser.

Let us know if you try it.

What skills do you feel you have been able to bring over to this business from the mortgage business? How was it running such a business? What did you like or dislike?

Actuallly all my leads i buy are scrubbed for me for the state and federal dnc.

and auto dialers are illegal if you were to dial phone numbers in order.
555-1234
555-1235
555-1236 etc...

i always got awesome response in the mtg world.
and cant wait to put something together for the landscaping world!!!

im not afraid of rejection.
i can knock doors (kirby vaccuums 2.5 yrs)
im a great people person
im not afraid to charge for my service
i have a lot of sales knowledge and training.
i love to market
im very familiar with direct mail(20,000) pieces per month
telemarketing
lead capture websites
auto responders
great follow up skills
good networker

i had 30 employees 3 offices and licensed in all 50 states
i can handle crazy stress and i am awesome with customer service. im just looking for something that will run itself after i build it up!

the mtg world has huge turnover and show much up and down in the market...

youll also depend on so many other people....
lenders
appraisers
real estate agents
customer
underwriters
attorneys

anyone of them can mess your deal up!!

very disappointing after working weeks on a loan.

well im rambling now, but i hope that answered your questions.


p.s. all successful businesses have the same basic essentials or business model.

i just hope to take ri by storm with my landscaping company and turn it into something viral!!!

I would actually like to use "got grass?"
and "your grass is my business" slogans

i want to be totally different than all the other companies around here...

thats what made my mtg company take off so fast.

im not afraid to be different and spend money to make money!

Why not get started and get your autodialer working. Maybe go with the angle "Not satisfied with your current lawn care service provider? Well now is your chance to switch to us. Leave a message and we will provide you with a free estimate to service your property along with our 5th mowing free with a lawn care contract."

Or take the part about the free mowing and the contract out of it.

Then from there see how many people respond and go out and give estimates. See who signs up with you and get rolling.

In fact, you could probably offer your auto-dialer services on here and make money that way as well. If the service works, I am sure other lcos would use it.

What are you most worried about getting started? What are the biggest issues you feel you face?

my biggest issue is equipment

not really sure what i should get or what good and whats not?

i would like to start with a 36 inch walk behind

but i want to keep the company as close to debt free as possible.

so do i go used or new?

other than that nothing is stopping me except the right tools!

when people see the name... i want them to be like wow thats w=ierd but remember it for that reason

I asked Troy to jump in here and offer you his advice on equipment. From past experiences, it seems we have seen a lot more success stories from lawn care operators who started out with used equipment and scaled up as they needed to. Those who went out and spent big money on new equipment found themselves in an immediate hole they were sometimes never able to pull themselves out of and their businesses folded because of it.

I start out with a murry mower. Went to a gasshopper and now a dixe chopper. I love it. It is the fast mower out there and cut nice.Some dealer will den-o there mower for you. It what you like.I am sure other lco like what they have too. So it up to you.

Welcome aboard! *Sounds like you have the right ideas and I fully expect you will be just fine.

The most important issue with equipment is dependability. *Minimize down time. *Many others in the field started with used gear, I went with new state of the art mowers with a dealer that knows the business and will provide a backup machine for me. More money up front, but that's my preference. *I, too, got a late start in the season, but I made more than enough to make payments through the winter.

Some dealers are offering some real good interest rates as well. *I had no payments for 3 months buying new. *Gives you a good head start.

Truck and trailer**Get a trailer 1/3 bigger than you think you need. *Then get a truck capable of pulling the loaded weight of the trailer. *Look for a truck with a tow package. *Mid size like a Ranger with proper gearing and tow package can pull over 5K pounds.

Trimmers, blowers, edgers, and trim mowers are dirt cheap. *Buy new. *Go with a local dealer with a service department and get to know them real well.

Most important of all, maintain them! *Oil changes, sharp blades, grease....And keep them clean!

Sorry it took so long guys to respond, I have been swamped.


On a personal note from me, don't go in over your head too fast with buying equipment that you don't need. I did that and had to cut my loss after only 6 months with the equipment and losing around $3,000. I have even gone into horrible debt financing equipment that was not needed. Still to this day I am feeling the effects of equipment that I bought 5 years ago.

It is better to start out small with just your general equipment that is needed: trimmer, mower, and blower.

Looks like to me you have great potential. If your going to do hardscapes and other landscaping adventures then the name RI landscape is great.
However; if you do not plan to get into the landscaping part of the business then I would consider a different name.
Money can be made depending on how you approach your business. I am no expert by any stretch of the imagination but I am just crazy enough to try different ideas.
Make a niche for yourself. Get those around you talking. Nothing can be better. That is the approach I took and now my phone never stops until I turn it off.

You have some good ideas but you have to be different.
