Question: When should I dethatch my lawn?

Answer: The best time to dethatch your lawn is spring. You should only dethatch your lawn though if there is a 1/2 inch or greater thickness of thatch. Too much thatch is not good for your lawn because it acts as a barrier that stops water & nutrients to pentrate into the soil. Some thatch is actually good for lawns because it acts as a cooling system to the surface of the soil.

Make sure that you apply a crabgrass control product after the dethatching to control any weeds that now have a greater chance of germination because of the exposure to the sunlight. Make sure to water the dethatched lawn thoroughly for many weeks. Your lawn will be under great stress for 20-30 days. Dethatching should not be done during the hot summer months.
