the best way that i have gotten new customers is to
1. Do a good job - obviously this is the most important, or at leaat it is to me. A lot of people overlook this, i thnk that this is the best marketing strategy. If you do a good job then people will have you keep coming back. They will also refer you to other people. The greatest way of advertisement is by word of mouth.
2. this might only work for some (sorry to those that can't). I play up the fact that i am just a kid trying to find my way, pay for college and (like everyone) make a living. I especially play up the fact that i am a student. This really helps me because people want to help me and they have sympathy for me. This works quite well.
3. Be dependable. A lot of problems that i hear from customers that switch from big companies is that they are not as dependable as the customer desires.

These are no brainers, but they have to be done.

I agree with the student thing big time. If you do a good job, people feel like they're doing a service to you by hiring them, so it's really a win-win in their mind. This may sound kind of mean, but if I can identify that kind of mentality with them, I'll usually add a few bucks to their bill, because I know I can get away with it.

You know, that is awesome.

I was thinking as I was reading these posts if you could charge a premium and play on those sympathetic feelings like they are helping you through school.

I guess you can! Great job!

How much more of a % do you feel you can charge as a premium when using that strategy?

I'm not really sure, since I've only ever applied it to smaller jobs. I usually tend to round prices to nice even numbers when I bid a job, so say I get $33 after I measure a lawn, I might drop that to $30 if it's an easy lawn, or I can tell that I have competition on the bid. If the person seems to like that I'm in school etc, I might round up to $35 or 36...it's never really extreme, since I still want to keep my prices relatively low.

I've also found that once customers develop loyalty, you can charge a little more, just as you would try to sell them on other services. Especially if they seem to be less concerned with price, I usually will charge more for other jobs I do for regular customers, keeping in mid that the quality has to be in line with their expectations.

To add to that...it would probably work for any type of sympathy story i.e. retired soldier who has returned from combat, or a recent immigrant who is trying to live out the "American dream". People really go for that stuff...so it's good to recognize as a way of increasing your margins.

The main thing about being a student-run business is that you can underbid the big companies, because you don't have as much overhead!!!

Will,

I bet others are wondering, how to you go about playing this up? Do you put it on your website? Or maybe in your marketing material?

What advice do you have for doing this?

I really don't have any marketing material. I used to, but now I don't want to expand anymore until i get out of school. Like i said earlier, the best marketing material is word of mouth. If you do a good job, then people will come to you.

When i go bid a job i tell them that i am a student. i am 17 years old, and "i am just an innocent little kid trying to make some heart earned money." The Truth: I know how to get people to feel sorry for me. I tell them, or sometimes they'll even comment before i can, is that there are so many lazy kids today, with video games and what not, i am just trying to do the right thing. You can always tell whether or not they are buying it or not. If they aren't than end that conversation. if they do, then keep going. If they buy into that, then they almost always pick you over the big companies.

So Steve, to answer your question, i tell them when i meet, or talk to them on the phone.

J/K If I really answered this question it would be about 30 pages long.

P.S. any moron can get customers, but let me tell you this... I have done so many things that have paid off. I now have people calling me daily and for the most part telling me that I am hired before I even give them my extremely high price (professional athletes, major ceos, and other head honchos), but they know no matter how high the price, the service is worth it, and for my clientele that I market, and the demographics in the area, they can not even put a price tag on my service because they know its that excellent.

There are way to many factors/tricks/physological factors that take place, it would take me week to type and it would be 30 pages long.

Mark lets hear some of the things you do that is very different from others. At some point my husband and I would like to attract customers that money is really not an object. We have gotten business by word of mouth. Our issue is not being able to find reliable help. We have had to turn down jobs because our plate is full right now.
