The season is starting to end. Start looking for new contracts, Most contracts will end in December and commercial accounts will start taking bids this month. Look on your county website, City`s websites look for vendors / purchasing link. You can also if they have it, look at the Current Bids, That will tell you who won the bid last year and how much the county or city is paying them. You can also do state contracts. Listen, There is BIG money in these contracts if your willing to do it and bid on them. Stop and talk with Apartment Mangers, Homeowners' Association for sub-divison. There is money to be made don`t wait till next year to find the work. Get it now while its hot. Come on people get out there beat the bush, Its not always going to come to you, You have to go to it.

Hi Rodman,

We were talking in another post about this and I wanted to know if you had more information. Have you come across government bids that gave preference to women owned businesses? If so, do you have any advice as how best to find them?

Goverment always leans towards the Minority. If you are women own business you can almost be certain that you will get the job.

Very interested in doing this

also i got the bid for pressure washing that house i put up here a few days go, $185 for about 2-4 hours worth of work

woman owned? meaning I am a woman and I own this company and my husband and another man work for me.... does that count?

As far as I know, it doesn't matter who the employees are. Certain government contracts give preferential treatment if the company has a majority owner who is female or a minority.

This is your countys website. I did not see anywhere for bids like I did the citys. BUT you could call ask someone if they do have open bids. And that you would like to become a Vendor.

That's what I want to know. The only thing I can think of would be to go to the neighborhood, knock on a few doors handing out fliers and quotes, and ask the homeowners about the HoA. They should be able to tell you at least an address.

You said in another posting about these condos that each unit takes you 10 minutes to mow. If you are charging 8.50 per unit and it takes 10 minutes; then you can do 6 in a hour. So if my math is right you are making $51 per hour. You might not base your bids off of a hourly figure but thats about what it comes out to. I am still new at this and I base my bids of a hourly figure. Basically a dollar a minute. Isn't $51 an hour kind of low for commercial contracts. I just bidded on 2 apartments and based my bid off of about $65 an hour. Was that to high?
I just gave them to the property manager on Thursday. How long should I wait until I call him back to see what his decision is or do I just wait for him to call me and leave it at that.

I want to know how to get ahold of HOA's to.

Well the bid contract I got from them ask for price PER UNIT. Only time I will consider doing something by the hour is if I take my Tractor and do tractor work. Bush Hogging Box Bladed work so on. Mowing I will never base that on a hourly wage. Its may be a bit low, But I will make up the deffernce on triming of the oaks twice a year. If you see it all works out.

Can you tell me if I was about right on my pricing even though it was based off a hourly figure. I don't charge by the hour I just estimate the time its going to take me.

What happens after they recieve the bids. Do they call me or do I call in a week or so. This was my first time bidding on apartments. He gave me two different complexes to bid on. I don't know if he was the property manager or owner but he says "well if you have a reasonable price then will go with you", but I just charge by my normal pricing. I think he was just looking for some one to do it for real cheap. I need to learn how to charge by the sq. ft so I can bid more accurately. Thanks.

Dont think your bid on hourly rate will work our for you. Most apartment complexes want a monthly rate or per cut rate. Did they tell you what they wanted? Monthly ? Weekly ? Per cut ? what all do you have to do when cutting the complexes ? Im sure there taking bids now, So tell me how long do you think it will take you to cut them or one by it self? From start to finsh? Do you have Commercial Insurance ? I can tell you now if you dont have it they will not hire you to cut there grass.

I think you misunderstand me. I'm not charging by the hour for my work. I don't do that with anyone. I just estimate how long its going to take me and then add up the time for the total amount. Then multiply it by how much I want per hour. Probably how most people do it when they start out. Thats the only way I know how to do it for now. I'm gonna figure out how to charge by the sq ft soon.

On the bigger complex, which is pretty small, he wanted mowing and blowing twice a month with a seperate quote for weekly blowing. There is two turf areas the same size that will take me 30 - 40 min each including trimming. I figured the blowing of the parking lot and walkways would take 2 hours max. But if I was blowing every week then hour and a half because there would be less clean up. So thats how I came up with my numbers
I told him 460 per month for mowing and blowing twice per month and 600 per month for weekly blowing and mowing twice per month not including tax.
I went and got quotes for insurance last week. I'm going to purchase my policy this week.
I don't know if this helps you understand a little better so you can help me. I can break it down farther if you need me to. This is probably still confusing to you. I figured charge a little higher than I would a residential customer. Isn't that the way it works?
I probably won't get these complexes but I gotta start somewhere figuring out how it works.

That sounds about right, Expect the TAX. What are you charging TAX for?

I live in Washington. There is tax on all landscape/lawn care services in this state. People that move here from out of state are always suprised that there is tax on services here. Its to bad because sometimes it makes it harder to get a job because a $50 lawn turns into a little under $55 with tax. Which is about another $20 per month for the customer. But thats the way it is here. Can't get around it. And the tax isn't coming out of my pocket.

So whats the waiting period before I call the property manager/owner back or until he calls me back. He must have got my number from my ad in the paper because he contacted me first looking for someone to take care of his properties. I wasn't even thinking about going and trying to give bids on complexes until you mentioned it in your post. Since its near the end of the season. Now when I'm driving around I've been looking at ones that I might be able to go bid on.

I would give it few weeks. Im sure he will be in contact with you. You might want to call and ask him what he thought about the bid and if you need to make any adjustments to it. LIke lower it if needed. to get the contract. Tell him you can work with them, that you really want the contract.
