A nationwide class action alleged that CarFax did not receive accident data in all 50 states ** and charged that the company overplayed how much information it could really deliver.

"If you want to find out if the car's been in an accident, I don't believe CarFax can tell you that with any certainty," said David A. McLaughlin, an attorney who initially filed a complaint in 2003 for a Tennessee used car dealer.

The dealer charged that a CarFax report that it bought for a 1995 BMW 525i automatic didn't show that the car had been involved in three total-loss accidents in three different states.

Very interesting. I have used them before too!
