raising money for doll and toy fund

Has anyone ever raised money for a non profit?
are there any particular steps you must take?
I was thinking of doing it for the holidays, because there are lots of family's that need help this time of year and maybe I can raise enough money to give a family Christmas.
Plus this could also be a good way to get my name out as well.

Have you thought of any specific family? If not, what about a specific organization in your community?
