How does Joshua Bird, co-owner of Shades of Green Lawn Service get new business?
Here are some of his suggestions.
Plenty of work, competition in lawn care field (http://www.jconline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070529/BUSINESS/705290320) - "It seems like every time I'm at a stoplight I see some truck and trailer there," said Grass Gators owner Scott Taylor, who has seen his customer base increase over the past six years.
"We don't do door-to-door advertising. A lot of it is word of mouth. You have to be reliable. Make sure you show up every week. Be there when you say you'll be there."

I know what you mean about sitting at a stop light and seeing other trailers pass. Sometimes it is two or three. I started my business by going door to door, then from there it was all word of mouth. If you do a good job, you will be referred. If you do a bad job, you wont be referred.

We have 45 accounts and have tried referal $ and it has not worked. We put out 1000 flyers a week and get mostly tire kickers. But when we get one we show up every time and do what we say but maybe 1 or 2 refer us. Any thing else we can do?

One of the great things about creating a marketing SYSTEM is that you can create it in such a way that it weeds out the tire kickers. Now, it definitely requires a bit of work and investment in technology (website, voicemail, direct mail, etc.), but it can be done.
I'm actually in the process of putting together some very specific information on how to make it happen, so if you'd like to hear more about it hop over to my website and be sure to get on my email list.
