Do you have any thoughts on whether flash animation is good or not on a website's home page?

Does it add to the site or detract from it?

Flash (when used properly) is all about 'eye candy' when used as an intro to a site or in a header. It serves no purpose but to be visually appealing. You need a plugin to view it and it take longer to download. In my opinion you should stay away from flash unless you use 'Action scripting'

What do you mean by action scripting?

Well right from the source...

Actionscripting is the programming language that enables you to use Macromedia Flash to create highly interactive, multimedia-based Web sites, product demos, teaching materials, and more.

Anyone that is familar with Flash, will know that it is basiclly drawing frame by frame to create motion. Well by adding Actionscripting to the mix you are able to tell that motion what to do, calculate and show.

Do you think that is what some sights use when they have animation on their main screen along with navigation? I never worked with that.
