Hey guys/gals....

Just started on this site a few days ago and found to be very useful. Great topics, opinions, and knowledge.

About us:

Been in business since 1983 serving south Minneapolis metro area. Mostly Homeowners Associations and commercial sites, but are branching out to have a residential crew this year.

Currently service 11 Associations and 6 commercial properties.

We do Grounds Maintenance, Landscaping, Hardscapes, Irrigation, Water Features, Spraying and Fertilizing, Tree and shrub pruning, Concrete Work, Weatherization, and Association Management.

Can you give me a quick summary of the differences of each decade you been in business?

Welcome to our forum! You have been around for quite some time! That is fantastic! What made you decide to make this change this year to residentials? And why do you feel you stayed away from them in the past?

Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you guys.....

Every decade had it's ups and downs, tied to the economy. Started out mowing, then added landscaping, then Association Management, then a construction division.

Every decade seemed to be harder to get business, so we tried to go the route of 'offer everything and cross-sell' and it seemed to work opening new departments, but then you have more overhead....payroll, equipment, and insurance is a killer. Although the construction division is about breaking even, the mowing and landscaping divisions are doing well.

HI Steve,

As I just mentioned in my last post, although the mowing is going well, it's still not where we were 10 years ago, so we're trying to get back up there.

We mostly do associations and commercial properties which were almost always free of "low-ballers" as you really had to have your sh*t together to do them everyweek, but not anymore. We just lost a big property we were doing as we got under-cut by HALF!! I can't wait to see what that property will look like when they start mowing. It took 4 of my guys 4 hours to complete it and we were barely hitting our profit goal, so it should be interesting.

That said, we're trying to think "outside of the box" and figured residential is the way to go. We're trying it, but obviously we'll be competing with the neighborhood kid with the lawn mower, so we're trying to offer everything across our divisions...mowing, landscaping, spray, fertilizer, landscaping, irrigation, etc as it tends to hold them to 1 company.

We'll see how it goes.....we're targeting neighborhoods with median home values over $500k and for it to work for us, we need to get a few houses in the same neighborhood to keep payroll and fuel costs at a minimum. We also have to buy another trailer for that crew as well.

We designed some door hangers that have program costs written on them. "Basic" mowing, trimming, blowing and "advanced" adding spray and fertilizing, so the homeowners know their costs up front...they won't have to bother to call us.

There seems to be so much competition in our area, but we figured we'd give it a try....

This is very interesting. With all that said, what is your view on thinking outside the box and then getting into the mix competing with the neighborhood kid with the lawn mower? Are there other services you could offer that would have a higher barrier of entry that could cut back on the amount of competition?

For instance, a while back, one of our members got into small scale excavation and found it was a great niche for him. Smaller than the big guys but bigger than those who operate a 21" mower.
