Here is a great article that is written by a successful lawn care business owner. It might give you new insight into areas you were unaware of.

Neet article though I found it very basic, explaining in detail some very comon sence concepts. It should have been titled:
"If you've never even cut your own lawn but want to start a lawn care business start here!" lol.

..... a lawn mower is a device with a blade usually driven by a motor used to cut grass (the green stuff on the ground outside) ..... haha j/k

Chuck,

What do you think most small lawn care businesses mess up with? Can you pick out other new businesses in the area and tell they won't be around long? If so what stands out?

Seems to me the guys that are out cutting lawns at $15 per cut gotta have trouble making ends meet. Though I suppose if you have no licence, no insurance, No real overhead & basic residential grade equipment their probably just happy to clear the $8 bucks an hour & not tell uncle sam about it.

So to directly answer your question I think doing a lousy job & underbidding yourself are very self destructive to many new businesses. I've had customers ask me to drop my price. They like me but got a lower quote from someone else.... I told them look I've found if I agree to do work for less than I need to charge to make a profit human nature is I'd eventually resent having to do the work for that price, so you start to cut cormers to make up time & try to earn a profit that way. When that happens sir, your yard won't look as good as it should. You will be unhappy with me, I'll be unhappy with you, your neighbors wont ask me to take care of their lawns, my companies reputation would go right in the toilet. This is not how I run my business sir so no unfortunately I can not lower my price & still be able to offer you the quality of work our customers have come to expect of us. But I ask you to give me the opportunity to show you we are more than worth the cost difference.

I usually get the job this way & everyone is happier for it!
