Has anyone used service magic? I talked to the guy from there and he said there are tons of calls for lawn care in my area, but i'm sure he just said that to hook me. I did research on the company, and there is a lot of mixed reviews. Some say its a total scam and rip off, and then others say the people saying its a scam don't know what they are talking about and are using the service wrong.

Has anyone had personal experience with it.

I know two people that used this.

One is a lawncare professional like us. He hated it said it was a scam. They would give him bids outside of his service area and then charge him for the chance to bid on it. Others he called immediately and someone else already had the job. So you have to be fast. You pay for every lead whether the customer changed their mind or the job is taken.

The other guy does home improvement. This guy likes it. Its worth paying the cut to them for thousand dollar jobs. He gets majority of work from them. The downside is to get the bids he doesnt even look at the jobs. He just bids them blind. Hes about 50 miles away from me and he called the other day asking if I had someone to do demolition in my city. I said sure ill bring them by. How many hours? I dont know maybe 4. It took the 2 of them and my guy 12 hours. I'm assuming he bid it for 4-5 hours.

So from that its what services you offer. If your doing hardscaping, excavation, construction, its probably worth it. If your doing $100 jobs and you pay 3-4 times to land one job then its not.

I used them and it almost put me in the poor house and I then cancelled because I got two jobs from it. Most people were just trying to find cheaper estimates to lower their present lco. I landed two one time yard repairs around 600. It cost me about 1400 with all the old and useless ups as well as ones I didn't tell them I wanted or were way to far away. Once I canceled they continued for 3 weeks sending jobs (that I never contacted ) and this is still continuing they sent me to collections for it and I had to sick my attorney on them. They are useless for lawns maybe good for hardscaping idk.

Yeah, thats what I thought. The guy insisted to me that there is absolutely no setup or sign up fees, but from the reviews I read, they had to pay to sign up, and then pay for the leads. I'm not taking my chance with it, i'm staying away from it.

I have had a great experience with them. I up my advertising budeget with them when I need work. When I am busy, I dial back the budget. Probably 1/3 are looking for the cheapest company out there. I have done around $12,000 this year. In the off season, property clean ups, lawn reworks, or landscape maintenance provided by them supplement my mowing. Many customers expand their services with me and sign contracts. I pay $7-22per lead.

I have used them solid for the last 4 years and....am still not sure what to tell you.

I am really thinking of letting it go, as was mentioned there seems to be a lot of people searching for the cheapest price.

Would not use it for mowing at all. Higher profit services & targeting higher income zip codes & it works ok, but have to be quick responding to leads. Don't get a lot of business from it but we do make enough off of the stuff that we do get to make it worth using. Thumbtack might be another option to consider, we have better luck with that.

if 4 years has passed while useing them and you still have no opinion then you should have got rid of them 3 years and 11 months ago.

i tried them and they suck and i believe they should change their name to assmagic.

Thumbtack has done good for me too.

The servicemagic guy said the same thing to me. "Lots of people are looking for lawn care in your area!!!!" It sounded shady to me...he was too pushy. I agree with the others who posted its more of a service for construction, home remodeling, etc. Not for lawn care.

I got a buddy who uses them for sod leads and tree removals.. I ran a few leads for him that were close to me and one customer told me that I was the lowest bid but out of her price range lol. I bid like $800 so idk what to say.. I know i would be pissed if I spent $20 on a lead and the customer thinks sod should be $100 a pallet installed.

I made a profile on thumbtack, seems like a good idea, but I have never heard of it, so I don't know if its as big as service magic. I think i'm going to stay away from sm for now.

i think thumbtack has to be fairly new. I heard about it a few months ago. I get leads every now and again, but the best part is you only pay for what you bid. i think it cost like $3 to bid, sometimes they have a sale and it's $1.50 or $2.

The thing is I get a good bit of leads from it but it seems like a lot of tire kickers and then you land a couple really good jobs from it that makes me hang on for a while longer hoping for another good hit!!

The guy keeps calling me and harassing me now, keeps leaving me messages like "Oh my god, we keep getting all these calls for lawn care" and "I guess your not serious about using our service, I have plenty of other businesses to give them to" and i'm thinking, yea this is defiantly making me want to use your service even more now. He told me multiple times that "if you get a bad lead just tell me and i'll replace it free" I don't believe that one bit.

They called me yesterday. I told him I don't want his servicejunk or whatever it is. He said he'd follow up in a few months, I laughed and said "Ya, because I cut grass when its snowing. Stop calling me."

Haha, well the guy was pretty cool when I was talking to him, but how hes seriously harassing me, I told him I would think about it and get back to him if I decided to use it.

Haha the guy kept calling and I finally answered and told him im not interested my schedule was full (even tho its not) and he said if your schedule is full why are you answering the phone in the middle of the day and i just hung up. F them.

I thought about giving them a try until I read the reviews on them, haha that changed my mind very very quickly.

I'm about the block the guys number, I swear if he calls one more time.

this is what they do. As soon as you fill out a profile the calls and emails start. Theyll even delete your profile after a while if you dont upgrade.

One of the biggest complaints is paying for bad leads. They say theyll refund you for them but never do. The best thing to do with any place like this is google reviews.

Is your number registered on the "do not call" list? (Does that exist in all states?)

Mine is. I don't know that it really makes a difference or not, but when I get a call like that I inform them to remove my number and that the next time I get a call, I will contact the attorney general's office.

I've even received a text message from someone trying to sell me "leads".
I texted them the above info and haven't heard back.




I dunno... maybe it's because where I live there are a lot of potential clients out, but I can't see paying someone for a lead to mow lawns.

all they are doing is trying to find more suckers to rope in.
that is how they make their money by having a ton of landscapers send them all a lead and charge them the bird dog fee.

the way i see it is we all work our tails off to build a business in hopes of one day being a success and i myself have been pretty successful but in the overall scheme of things considering how many landscapers there are individually we are nothing.

these people call up businesses acting as if they hand picked you and you are so special that they want you to represent them when all they really did was look up landscapers in a specific region that they want to service and they give them all the same line until someone bites.

unless you tell them no outright they just keep calling and calling and then try to twist your words and play mind games to rope you in.

when people like that call unannounced i tell them piss off assclown and hang up on them.

I know these sales people are just trying to to make a living also but damn it gets old after awhile, they don't understand the word no !! Tell them to get a real job, buy a mower and get to work...:D

Do not call list does not apply in most states to business numbers. If your business number is listed as your cell phone then you are out of luck.

It is a service site and it is magic if you get the work... Hence the name.

SM has questionable ethics. I question the tactic of referring the same lead to three different contractors and charging each of them a lead fee. Then you do get a lot of tire kickers, or people who you're unable to get a hold of. For every ten leads I will land 1-2 jobs. I have found some excellent customers through them though, people who keep calling me back. I've done north of $4,000 worth of projects for a couple from what was initially a one time irrigation repair lead that cost me $11. Then they hired me to do their monthly landscape maintenance, and she referred me some other work for her friends. So I honestly think SM could be worth it to help you grow your business. The trick is to get in good with a good customer if you are lucky enough to get the initial job. They'll keep calling you back if you treat them right (this time no lead fees). Another good idea can be to use SM with just a couple of local zip codes. You won't get that many calls, but when you do it'll be minimal travel time making it easier and more profitable if you get the work.

Do you still use the service? Do you think it would have helped you to use them earlier in your business or did it work out better when you did start to use them?

Also, how do you find your return on your marketing dollar spent on SM compare with other methods?

Personally, guys, I would stay away from Service Magic. I know this is my first post, but you'll get scammed.

They get all their leads from google ppc and seo.

If you can get listed on page 1 of google maps and in the search engines for your local area... you'll get 100% of the leads.

Being this is my first post, I guess an introduction is in order. I'm considering taking on a handful of customers this spring/summer... I live in a small area, 20k population.

In real life I'm a marketer and help small businesses get customers from the interwebs.

Well, what gets old is sitting inside in front of my computer all day. Last year, I picked up a commercial account that included 8 yards every 10 days.

Problem is that the 8 yards are along an 87 mile route... so it wasn't the most profitable venture.

But it got me out the house.

Anyways, they're expecting me to keep the account this year, but I haven't decided whether I am or not.

So, I just set up a simple bare bones website 2 weeks ago and have began the ranking process I use for my local marketing clients.

Believe it or not, I've already gotten page 1 rankings for a handful of search terms. Unfortunately or Fortunately, depending on how you look at it, mowing season is still 6 or so weeks away.

That's one of the reasons I came to this forum, to see what other folks are doing and how early they start their marketing before the season.

Anyways, final thought, I'd stay away from Service Magic. I've done the web research, and the market is pretty sparse in a lot of large cities (online market).

If any of you want to see what I mean by "Google Map" listings and what I've done, just shoot me a PM.

Being that mowing season is still around the corner, I may be willing to help some of you get listed in your area for a small fee to help cover the costs of my web team doing the actual work.

Anyways... hope to contribute and learn a lot here.

I have gave SM/HA a chance mid summer and they waived the sign up fee. I had to modify my area rather fast cause I got a ton of garbage. I have landed one hedge trimming job that has covered any money I have into it. However the quality of customer I have experienced on SM/HA is worse then Craigslist. I have actually landed 4 good customers via CL.
