Sponsoring events or donations

Does your business find itself in a position where it is asked to sponsor more events than the budget allows or to donate to more events than your budget will allow?

How do you go about handling this? How do you choose which ones are the best to get involved with or not?

I used to sponser things all the time, but no longer. I no longer sponser any type of sporting event such as bar league volleyball, or mens basketball league. It is a complete waste of money.

I don't mind sponsering something that goes back into the commmunity. Such as music programs, things for the library, playground equipment, etc.
