hi everyone! i hope you all are having a safe and happy new years! as i am sure many of you are i am starting to look at ideas to make this season a bigger a better season than the last and grow my business.

i have thought about a few new servies i could off and i have also considered signing everyone up on a service agreement (contract) considering i have never done such. with this service agreement i have thought about offering different packages such as basic platnium and premium but i am not to sure what services i should include or how i should go about putting the packages together. so i was wondering if anyone else does this kind of thing and if they could offer some help itd be greatly appreciated.

i have also thought about transferring as many as possible over to a once monthly bill pay system instead of per service. the monthly rate would of course be determined by the package they select but they could of course always add any number of different services for an added fee. is a monthly billing preferred or is it more of a hassle than its worth?

About 1/4 of my clients are on flat monthly rates. It's great because you are always guaranteed money during the slow months and you can budget better because you can count on that money.

The downside is when you have a heavy month, and the work out weighs what their monthly bill was. But of course, it all evens out in th end.

I wouldn't suggest putting all of your clients on flat monthly rates, I would suggest doing a hybrid of billing options. For example, what happens if all of your clients are on a flat monthly rate, and you only figured in 24 mowings, but 25 mowings happen. That is a lot of lost money if all the clients are on that flat rate plan. So perhaps do 1/2 flat monthly rate, and the 1/2 per service billing.

This is how all my commercial clients are billed. I havent had much luck getting homeowners to agree to this. This year rain and wind caused a lot of branches/trees to fall so I might have better luck with my pitch. Just got to sell them on no matter what your covered.

Typically we cover weekly maintenance(mowing, trimming, weeding, litter pick up), monthly edging of all beds, mulch, spring and fall clean up, trimming of all bushes twice, removal of fallen branches, a few organic sprays. Anything other then that would be out of contract service.

As far as season contracts. I find it ridiculously easy to do a fall clean up when we're servicing the client weekly. Since the last 3-4 mowings we mulch it all. When we go there to remove whats left its very little. On the other hand the one time calls to remove leaves are tedious because the homeowner just lets them accumulate. Overall a maintained property is much easier to keep in shape. Youll show up and see you dont need the string trimmer this week, you can wait till next to mow, etc.

If you are to do the monthly billing, be sure to make it so they are paying for the upcoming month. If you wait the 30 days to bill for services rendered, you in actuality may be waiting 60 days to get that first payment. This can only be done on residential clients, commercials will not work that way.

very good point that I completely forgot and something that we do.

For example, with us, we bill on January 1st, and it's due on the 21st. That is the the flat rate invoice for February. So before any work is performed in February, we need to get paid by the 21st of the previous month.

Thanks guys that helped a lot. I'm only 16 I've been doing lawn mowing for about 5 years now so I'm also looking at new services for this year. And being almost 17 I don't have any commercial yet so how would you suggest to try and get the residential clients to do monthly billing?

Some ways to sell it:

1) Sell it as a way to budget for lawn care.
2) Feel free to throw in a small discount too, such as 5% off the total price. 3) They will love the idea that they know "exactly" what their monthly bill will be each month without any surprises.
4) They won't have any high bills during the summer season, instead it will be a reasonable bill.

Hi Jeremy,

With your current customers, do they call you as needed? Are they bi-weekly cut customers or how are they currently handled?

most were biweekly last year, 4 single cuts, 2 would do weekly every now and then, then there was one that would call just when ever.

i was just now going through my customer list from last year. i take that back there was one single cut, 2 that had me do it for like a month, and then one guy had me do it for about 2 months then had a baby so he started doing it him self again. would it be a good idea to call these clients this year and see if they would like for me to mow again? i figured it wouldnt hurt.

Absolutely! Why not! Call them, say hello, ask how they are doing and see if they need your assistance this year.

All of my residential customers are on a flat monthly fee, they are billed the week before the end of the month for that months service. I collect all payments the following week after I drop off the invoice at their door. I have a few customers that I figured out that I have to either have pay in advance or send reminder texts to them a few days before their invoice is due. Seems to work for me. What I like about the flat rate is you are guaranteed steady income 12 months of the year.

Since this is part time for me and most of my clients are bi-weekly then some occasional during the hot dry months in Oklahoma. I generally call them and let them know I am coming in a couple of days or something like that and they put a check in a envelope on the bottom of the back door. It has always worked out for me so far.
Since I do this more on the side but getting to the point I am actually looking to hire a second guy. I really try to keep my clients close to areas I travel hence from my full time to my home so I can hit them on the way home or on the weekends.

Here for a smal (less the 1/4 acre) goes for about 15 to 20 per cut, If you take 4.3 (weeks) per month the the price is 64.5 to 86. On a monthly rate I charge 55 to 75. Why lose money like this? People pay for the month, No rain=No mowing but still get paid. Bad part is when it does rain lots of work. This is every month for the year, I include fall and spring cleanup. The only extra charge is things like mulch. People love this when they realize that I will be there every week to clean up leaves, pick up thier gardens, limbs etc. They are used to people overcharging for cleanups, and such. I make more money and actually do less work.
