Do more door to door advertising . This is what I was thinking what if I could pay $50 for every person to sign up . Listen to what I did I put out a posting on craigslist looking for canvassers and wrote that they earn $50 for every person to sign up to my services. So then after I got a person to do it and thought about it I realized that I could have 10 people going door to door for me and it would not matter beacause I did not pay hourly so . I basicky had my own army all from craigslist . AND did it work sure it did . I got 5 nw accounts in just a couple days . It's great I keep looking for more people to go door to door. Imagine 25 people going door to door for you . Walking around for free. And I only pay them when a coustomer signs up for my services .... That's right a whole years worth of lawn care . And the best part is by the track I'm on I'll cover my whole city within a month.

Oh Ok I saw you posted this in another post too.

Can you tell us a little about this?

Did you get those 5 customers just from one person canvassing the area?

What do you train them to say?

Also at what point do you pay them?

11-03-2010, 10:54 PM
I have them Made a uniform , a jacket with our name and a hat as well and then they go house to house talking about our services and lawn care and nit only that but I have a special that if they sign up we give them a free pressure washing worth up to $100 and you might be surprised how well it works . The five customers was from me and another person but now I have aroun five people . So I basically don't have to anything . And I can always get more.

11-03-2010, 10:56 PM
The way I made it is so I can't lose I only pay them once I customer signs up! That way I can have as many canvassers as I want .

11-03-2010, 11:03 PM
That is genius!

What is included in the power washing? Is that a house or a driveway or what?

11-04-2010, 06:58 AM
I do Just the driveway for free the the people see and they want everything done ... Side walks steps backyard patio .. So they have to pay . An I found that I can charge higher and they will still want to have me do it . So it works great . It work because no other lawn care comapany dies that so I get so much more business .

11-04-2010, 10:51 AM
This is absolutely genius!! Do you have a copy of the craigslist add that you put out for people? Do you screen them or do you just let anyone go out there and promote your business? Also how do you set prices? Do you teach them what you would bid for a job?

Just thought I would throw those questions out there because I'm sure many people will like your wonderful Idea.

11-04-2010, 03:14 PM
I write a craigslist ad saying that I am looking for some to go canvassing and since I'm in a huge city .. Chicago I get tons of people and then I have then send me a picture of themselves . I look for people that look smart and clean cut . Then after I get a few people I train them to write down all the house that they talked to and requested estimates then they would call me and I would give them a qoute I guess I could have them do the estamites but I would also want to meet the customer. On my ad I write I'm looking for canvassers for Arlington hts . And if they call me great

I have done this, during last fall.

It's nice, though in reality these people may make your business look bad if they aren't instructed properly or are lousy on giving a pitch.

You want them to represent your business and be able to answer any question(s). Unfortunately, they cannot - you will always forget to inform them about a certain detail.

It's less walking for you, though you spend a lot of time training and worrying about these fools ruining your image.

Sure, they aren't going to throw out flyers as they are paid per job you get - though they could end up LYING to potential customers in order to attract them.

I had a guy tell a customer we'll lower a price... Didn't help the business at all.

You must be hands on at all times, trust is not something we should count on to grow our business.

Just my opinion. There are loopholes everywhere, and it's human nature to find them.

11-04-2010, 05:46 PM
That is why I have a BACKGROUND cheek done so I can see their history and so far I haven't had any problems since another thing I do is have them call me whenever anyone needs a estimate . So I can not lose ... That is how I run my business .

That brings up another good point. Should such sales staff be given some kind of flyer or door hanger to hand out when they go door to door that includes that specific power washing offer?

Would that help them increase sales?

Could you also have some kind of special code on the flyer or coupon that the customer presents in order to get the free power washing and then the sales staff could get their commission?

Also, what if the customer wants mowing done but doesnt want to sign an annual contract? How do you handle paying the sales staff for that?

11-04-2010, 07:26 PM
Yes I put codes so I know who put it out. And if they don't want a contract they won't get the free pressure washing as I offer that as a bonus for signing up but they still need to sign a agreement that says that they will stay for 3 weeks so .. Like a 30 day notice to cancel so I always win ..

11-04-2010, 07:37 PM
About 90% will sign up for the contract so it's a great way to do that also I went to my local pizzeria and asked if they could staple one of my flyers the one with the pressure washing special to every pizza box . They said it would be ok .... That's amazing it's not a small pizza place it's a Very Very good one in my area ... So that means people with more money would go there . Meaning better customers for me . Plus I get free advertising they put out about 100 pizzas a day .. I've Been told . Will see just started today . Mabye tomorrow il go to a Chinese restaurant . I've found that the more upscale the place is the better so compare a taco shop to a organic caf big difference . I'll keep you updated . But to let you know this is my first year and I already have 100 customers . Wow . I'm a studying to get my degree In marketing and business . As well as some graphic design . This is my first business and definitely not the last . My favorite quotation is weather you think you think you can or that you can't , you are right . Henry Ford.

It would be great to advertise at other business

11-05-2010, 05:45 PM
Did you have to do anything for the pizzeria? I would figure if you went their every quarter and power washed something for them, you could get your marketing material in everything they send out.

You could repeat this process at other restaurants too!

It would be great to advertise at other business
What other places have you been considering to advertise through?

11-05-2010, 08:58 PM
If I did do like a team up with local places that would be great. What I have seen done is amazing my plan is to market my biz everywhere . Bandit signs , restaurants, stores , truck , advertising benches and even from that ... You see those benches with huge ads right ...? Well I went to an upscale golf course to see If I could put some their they said no but .. They said I could put regular benches with a little sign saying donated by accurate lawn care . Then today when I was at my library I saw these weird sculptures like bikes and bike chains all welded together to call art . So that was I my library and on it in a unmissable sign it said Donated by Anderson bike shop . That got me thinking any ideas on what I could do . Another thing I was thinking of doing I teaming up with nursery to plant one hundred trees in our city, why well we could do so thing in the news like local lawncare biz and nursery plant one hundred trees in our city if you want to donate a place for a tree call accurate lawn care . So people get free trees and other stuff .

Yea this is great too. If you could get a picture of yourself planting a tree and then give it to the paper and a short write up of what is going on, they just might print it.

Maybe you could do this for the community section, looking for volunteers or maybe donations to buy more trees. Maybe have your business number as your contact number?

You could have a certain time you will meet to plant some trees in a specific part of town and request volunteers to show up at a specific date and time.

11-05-2010, 10:07 PM
Yup exactly that then we will have a huge celebration for the One Hundredth tree like we will have a bunch of people come down to the city park .. I know the major ..... We could sponsor a cook out sort of event and that would be a great thing . But ideas are just ideas ...

11-06-2010, 12:28 PM
Will it work

11-06-2010, 09:02 PM
Have you ever done that

11-07-2010, 04:44 PM
I think it would be a fantastic marketing experiment. When you want to get the word out about your business, you really have only two choices. Spend to get the word out with money or spend your time.

When you have more time than money, it makes sense to spend time. When you have more money than time, it makes sense to spend money.

Any opportunity you get to meet your neighbors or members of your community you should jump on it. Think of yourself as a politician and go out there shaking hands with people while you hand out business cards.

11-07-2010, 09:32 PM
That will be great!

11-08-2010, 08:39 PM
I got a customer for next season from the pizza place

11-09-2010, 06:28 PM

How do you track where the new customers find you from?

11-10-2010, 06:05 AM
They just told me

11-10-2010, 11:57 PM
That is great. If you can keep track of this, at the end of the year, you can figure out where you got the most jobs from and expand on that kind of marketing next year.

Maybe also keep track of the date too. That way you know when people were looking for your services and you can focus more marketing efforts in that date range.

11-11-2010, 03:46 PM
Ya that would be a good idea

11-17-2010, 11:41 AM
Do you happen to have a copy of your flyer that you were able to get attached to the pizza box? I always like looking at peoples flyers it always sparks ideas for me...as it may for other people.

11-18-2010, 03:19 AM
In case Dan doesn't post it, we have a couple sample restaurant flyers in the free lawn care flyer (http://www.gopherforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=34) section here.
