Gift cards / VIP cards

Has anyone ever experimented with gift cards or VIP cards? Where you could hand them out with a percentage off your next purchase. Or sell them in specific denominations to give out as gifts?

I don't know if they would work in this industry but can you ever remember seeing anyone use them?

What I would always do is hand out cards at the end of the season for customers that resigned for the next year
