Whats the best way to deal with clumping grass, besides cutting more often? Would different blades help? All of the properties I mow are every two weeks.
I like to cut my lawns at 2-2.5"

What mower are you using?

2009 Exmark Lazer Z AS. 48" deck. Blades are just the factory ones. Ive only got 14 hrs on this machine.
I guess that info would have helped a bit.

Actually, I just wanted to know if you had a Toro 40" because there is nothing that can be done to prevent it from clumping. I returned mine and got a 36" to solve the problem.
Now with yours you could try some gator blades. When I had clumping problems with my 40" I tried some Toro Atomic blades (they are notched like the Gator blades) and it helped a little bit. I can't say for sure it will work but it's worth a shot.

is the grass clumping in the chute as well or is it just leaving a trail?

It is clumping in the chute mostly. I noticed if I have the chute up it about eliminates the issue. Just that I cant cut like that all the time.
I picked up some Gator Blades today. Ill try those when I get the mower back from the shop and report back.
I could try cutting the lawns later in the day but its been near or above 100 degrees here lately so I try to start as early as legally possible.

I have a few friends who cut with their chute removed, or up. It will eliminate the issue, but then you have damage to worry about. I only lift my chute when needed, and when I do I always make sure I'm pointed away from windows and doors.
I hear good things about gator blades, never tried them though.

I just broke a rear window in my work truck yesterday by keeping the chute up. :( I've never chucked a rock before but I guess it can happen. That's a $150 lesson.

Aside from cutting tall grass...
One of the properties I mow weekly i have this problem. Come to find out they have a irrigation system. Had no clue about it till I showed up at noon today to cut grass and it was wet and had not rained.

Would it help at all if the bottom of the deck were sprayed with some non-stick lubricant?

Ive found that going over the rows of clumps with the mower set 3/4" to 1" higher then the cut height disperses the clumps ok.
