I have been posting ads on craigslist and have gotten some jobs from there. However, I recently had someone email me about my ad and from the get go it was strange. This person was out of the country but wanted me to do their lawn for them when they got back in town. Then they wanted to send me money for a retainer until they got back. Here is the last email I got for them.

Yes all the informaition is correct. The phone number is correct also but if you are dialing internationally you may have to dial 0019512560708. Since I am unable to get to the house until you arrive it is best just to wait until you are here. You do not need to send any money early just have it when I am able to come an look at the yard. I can still get it done right away for you.

Thanks.....Tim

So I am wondering is this some sort of a scam? Are they trying to get some personal info from me that they can use to steal my money? Has anyone else run into anything like this on craigslist ads? Just curious what you guys think about it.

Don't give this guy any of your info it is a scam. They send out vague e-mails when your selling something saying I am interested in your "item" or "service". Once you respond then they get a little more detailed because its now it's not just a mass e-mail, it's the guy that's trying to scam you.

He's not calling you because he doesn't want to pay for the international call. Plus his number is most likely a disposable cell phone or a pay phone.

YES!

This is a major scam! Have you gone by his address? Was there anyone there? Was the lawn mowed already? Does it look like someone LIVES there?

Just look at his English. Now before everyone jumps on the racism bandwagon, where are the scams coming from these days? My guess is that this guy is from the middle east or Africa. Now this is just based on his use of the English language. It very well may be legit but asking for all your info like that is not cool.

Whoa I just reread your post and you don't even have the address to his home he wants cut. How does he know what to pay?

This is a very interesting post.

I would think no matter what, don't deal with anyone for lawn care that is outside of the country. You may not want to deal with anyone you can't meet in person either.

What kind of problems can he run into, even giving his address?

The scam is at some point when they think you trust them, they will send you a check for more than you need. example - they send you 2,500 check, you deposit it and send them back the 2,000 overage. Problem is the check they send you is a forgery, but your check is real. They cash your check before your bank gets it back as a bogus check. your left with 2500 negative in your account (r more)scammer has 2,000 of your money.

don't waste your time

I had a similar situation like this. I had an item on Ebay and I had some guy from India trying to buy it. I knew it was a scam so I told the guy I sold it.

Hope you didn't get scammed already

Too many of these going around these days

So I suppose craigslist is out of the question.

I made a post a few days ago, I got an annoying guy emailing me consistently, never really asking for an estimate or anything. Just prying information.

My friend had written an ad on Craigslist, someone-somehow managed to fill her ad up with **** instead of advertising her business.

I hate craigslist, nothing but tards who respond.

These are the same scams they send to you in email all the time do not give then info just del them. I got about ten a day just del them.Sure hope you did not do any thing probably not a real address any way.

Yep. SCAM....

Most likely the person is sitting somewhere in Nigeria. Nigeria is where the majority of this scams originate from recently. The same broken English is a tell tale every time.

Avoid it and I would recommend only doing business with people whom you have met. That is a good way to avoid these situations in lawn care.

Good luck,
Eli

No I haven't done anything with this person. I told them I would only do something if we meet. I got home yesterday and a fed ex package was there for me. Opened it and there was a check for $2500.00. I took the check and printed off all the emails I got from them and went to the FBI office. I doubt they will ever be able to get the guy.

My reason for posting was this. I put an ad out on craigslist a couple of times last week. I was thinking it was free advertising. However, out of the post I only got one legitimate response. Everything else was spam and this scam guy. So was wondering is graigslist really worth the hassle. Sure its free advertising but is it worth it really?

Just wanted to put my 2 cents in on this one. This IS a scam, however Cheese2009, Craigslist is a great place to get business. So far that is the only advertising that I do and seems to be working great. You just have to deal with these type or the phone calls from the supposed US Yellow Page Directory if you put in your phone number. Just look at the way any of them are writen as far as replies. The one like "Hows it going? I am very interested in your service." and then they have a link to any site... DELETE... Don't reply at all. the only thing they are looking for is your actual email address so they may spam you hard. Lastly always put it as anonymize when it comes to the email otherwise your will just get nonstop spammed.

Regaurds,
Dave

One more thing, just a little secret, I post every Monday and Friday around 6 or 7 am. Reason being, office workers, like I was, alot of the time don't want to be there those two days and are looking for anything else to look at other then work those 2 mornings. I normally do 1-2 legit estimates off of every post that i put on there.

I have a customer Ive never met im not saying it happens all the time and the whole time i thought it was some scam. But she called my number out of country left email, went to her house, told her how much, she sends checks via online BOA mail and pays before I do any service. So it can work. Spoke with her renter so that helped, I guess she normally live in California and has a rental here dnt ask me why.

Ive also heard of people having great leads on craigslist but there are plenty of other free avenues of free advertising to go with. Blogspot, Google Maps, Bing, Yellow pgs, etc obviously some you can upgrade from free to paying but some how from shear dumb luck im on the first page of google maps listing (3-6 or so) on a google search. Maybe its cause I used blogspot as my listed website was all I had at the time. did that make sence?

Ive got more business from the free stuff then my website and flyers combined. You just have to be creative.

So far I have only advertised on Craigslist. I've made enough money to sustain myself so far.

Everytime I post I get replies. A lot of my regular customer I never meet, or have only met a couple times. I show up, mow, and leave a bill. I'm soon to change that, as I'm tired of the slow payers, but it works for me.

I haven't gotten any spam yet, but I'm also going to start telling people that I need payment up front. Even though I haven't been screwed yet, I don't want that day to happen.

Good luck!

There is somebody calling to have people mow yards for $15 a lawn. The thing thats strange is that they want about 60 pictures on each spot. Why not just one to four before and after photos? It seems kind of strange. A guy that I work with within my business, told me that they don't pay you until the end of the month. They do give you a lot of yards I think like 20 a day and your only at one spot for about 10 minuets. The only reason why he's working for me and not them is because he can't afford to spend a ton of money on gas to get these jobs done and not be able to get paid until the end of the month.

Yea those are bank properties, I have done some of those the pay $15 for anything under 15,000 sq feet and under 1foot tall. Anything over 15,000 of taller than a foot you take pictures an the you bid on the property. They pay on the 1st and the 15th

It is called working for a company that dose reo's and hud homes. They pay 40 for the first cut and 35 for recuts. You have to have one mill in insurance min and take 8 before 8 after and one of the street sign and house number.

Max allowed grass height is 8 in and lot size is 100 x 150 with are with out a house on it. Any thing over that and you bid are cut then bid per work order.

If the house has some one in it you take pics to prove it and move on and get 15 for the visit. taking pics and measuring the lot is time consuming so this is only good for a starter business. If you have a real company and crews you will lose money in the long run as if the pics are not done right you will not get paid and they pay on a net 30 for the first week and net 15 after that. they set the rates not you so your not in control of the pricing.but it is not bad for a start up company with no employees to do to get things going for a while.

I use Craigslist alot but in my ad I do not use a link to email address, and I put my website address but not as a link to let the actual people contact me. This is not to say that I dont get spam but it cut down alot and just delete the ones that look fishy.
What I think is funny about Craigslist is that most of the ads listed looks like someone posted them while texting all the missed spelled words and just look like crap. Here is one of my listing ads that I use. It's the only one listed around me that looks half way decent.

I have had good success so far with Craigslist. I post my lawn care ad in the "farm and garden services" section. I do not put my e-mail address in there so I have not had any spammers. I do put a link to my website and the only problem I have had with that is that some guy from another lawn company around me goes to my blog and posts how much of an *ss I am and that I'm taking his business. Luckily I have to approve the post before it gets posted on my site so I just delete it.

The trick to posting craigslist ads is knowing how to do html coding. With this you can make your ad like Paradise Landscapings. Everyone else's ads are just plain type and black and white. With html coding you can add logos and color type and pictures. I am one of the only ones in my area doing this and there are about 10 lawn care companies posting on there everyday, but mine stands out and looks professional so I am probably getting more calls which is why that guy keeps posting in my blog.

What about your phone number? Do you include that on your craigslist ad or is it just easier to funnel would be customers to your website first?

I wish I did not have to put my phone number in the ad because of the sales calls, but atleast this tells the possible customers that I am local and not a scammer myself. I have had alot better responses and feedback because of the better ads.

Yea Craigslist is Awesome, I've completely developed my landscaping business based on calls that turned into customers over the past year. Some of these customers for long term monthly maintenance.

I put my phone number and also a clickable link to my website which I can tell people are using by the number of visits I get each day to my website. Craigslist is the best free advertising you can get!

Question:

Is there anything to be concerned with in regards to having my phone number listed in a Craigslist ad?

I'm already hesitant due to the amount of spam that comes in to an e-mail, but do you get "phone spam" as well?

At least with e-mail spam, you just delete it, but I don't want to be answering half a dozen calls a day for no reason.

I want to place a Craigslist ad next week, so I'd like to minimize the CRAP, while maximizing my exposure to real customers.

I've been reposting mine for about a month now and haven't received one call yet.

Be sure to not use your area code in the advertisment. Make sure your website also does not list an area code. Most spammers are from out of town.

What are you saying? Does that mean that I should expect to get "phone spam"?

I mean, if that's the case, then I have to wonder if "free advertising" is worthwhile.

I can't "not" use my area code. We have two here, so it would not be possible for the folks to know what to dial.

If you cover more than one zip then you have to. I doubt it will be a problem getting phone spam. If you do get marketer calls what i do is mark them in my phone they are telemarketers and then I ignore those calls from then on.

And guess who the biggest Telemarketers that I get calls from?

The Stupid Phone companies, Yellow Pages and ATT.

Have only had about 6 since last year so really not to bad and I give them such a hard time when they call me maybe they blacklist my number. It is still pretty bad when they troll the Craigslist ads just to try and making cold calls.

The last call was last week from ATT and they guy was trying to sell me google advertising and ranking services. His big thing was I can get you top spot on Google search in my area, I told him that's funny because if you search for Lawn service in or around my town I'm in the top spot so how can you make that any better. He didn't know how to respond to that and wanted to know where I am from so he could see. I said well you got my number from my website since I do not place it in the Cragslist ads so you should already know where I am located and the service area. It took me all of 4 minutes to get him off the phone darn salesman just cant take no for an answer. Kind of like some of those darn Lawn care guys going door to door. LOL,,,,

Ya gotta prepare for these calls on the daily. I used Craigslist and Backpage for advertisement, but the second I jump into another site such as Webcosmo or Kijiji I get bombarded with calls from telemarketers. I've heard em all from top Google Ranking, to simple Golf publications that will get you infront of your local golfing community. I've had one rep tell me that there was 400+ searches in my area in the past day for landscaping and yard care services.

In a world of business, these calls are hard to avoid, it's up to you to figure out which ones are value calls and which ones are detours.

Ahh! this brings back warm memories. I got involved in "scambaiting" a few years back and spent some time making these scaming *******s jump through hoops.

http://www.419eater.com/

It's a website that chronicles the efforts of people who turn the tables on scamers.

I'm a bit of an ******* by nature so scambaiting was really gratifying for me. I could be an ******* to people who truly earned it.

How do I get involved in this sort of thing. I'm only 17, will be 18 in March, and think this would be a good opportunity to get out there. I do plan on getting insured in the next couple weeks. I just got a smokin deal on 2 great dane stander mowers this weekend. Got a 52" and a 61" for $400 a piece. I also have a 36". So I feel I now have more than enough equipment, but need to grow up my business to take advantage of the equipment. Where or who do I contact to be able to do business for the banks that own the property that needs serviced? I think I could handle about 10 lawns a day or more, so I'm really interested in how to get in touch with this deal. I'm located in Omaha, NE. Any help is extremely appreciated. Thanks
