For God, Country, and Coca-Cola: The Definitive History of the Great American Soft Drink and the Company That Makes It
by Mark Pendergrast

Coca Cola has got to have the best known brand name of any company around the world. It seems you can visit anywhere and find a Coke sign.

Coca-Cola was first concocted around 1884 in Atlanta, Georgia. Coke's inventor, was John Pemberton. Did you know he was injured in a battle in the Civil War? Isn't that amazingly interesting? The next time you sit down and drink a coke, think about that and tell your friends or family. History can be a lot of fun.

Later as The Coca-Cola company was growing, it made a major bad deal. Asa Candler head of Coke in the earlier part of the 1900's was approached by two attorneys who thought that Coke would sell well if it was bottled. Originally Coke was created to be sold only through fountains.

Asa didn't think Coke could ever make any money selling through bottles so he sign off the bottling rights in perpetuity to these two men. What does perpetuity mean? It basically means he signed off those rights forever! What a headache that turned out to be for Coke.

There is so much great history in this book. If you have time, please read it. Although be warned it's really long, 621 pages. But worth it!

Do you like Coke or Pepsi better?
